To begin the tour we meet at a delightful old Coaching Inn in a picturesque town not too far from the two main London Airports Heathrow and Gatwick. We travel to visit Hever Castle, the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, perhaps the most infamous woman in English history. It was she who changed the course of history, causing the split with the Roman Catholic Church by refusing to be the mistress of Henry VIII, only his wife. From 1900 to 1960: Hever Castle was owned by the Astor family and is now owned by a Trust dedicated to preserving the historic castle and grounds. Jousting tournaments take place on most weekends during the summer. Back to the coaching Inn for the night. There is sufficient time to walk around the town in the early evening and enjoy the setting of the village green with some traditional old English pubs and lots of antique shops.

Dover

We travel to the South coast where the tour will visit Dover Castle, Deal Castle and Walmer Castle. Dover Castle: Dover castle, set on the famous white cliffs, is one of the premier castles for the defence of the Realm and dates back to Roman times. Henry VIII stayed here regularly when supervising the construction of the coastal defences or when he was travelling to and from France. Here you will have some free time to also explore the other unique features of the castle which was used by military right up until the 1960’s. Imagine life as a medieval soldier under siege as you explore the atmospheric medieval underground tunnels, see one of Europe’s best-preserved Roman lighthouses and walk the extensive battlements. There is also a WWII underground hospital and tunnel complex where the Dunkerque evacuation of 330,000 British and French troops from Occupied France in 1940 was planned and carried out. Deal Castle: Deal castle, built in a hurry by Henry as invasion fears were getting stronger in 1540. Deal's Tudor heart beats loudly, with huge bastions and cannons ready to repel any invaders. It was here that Anne of Cleves first set foot on English soil and where she dined before setting of to marry the King Walmer Castle: Walmer Castle, a mile away from Deal and also clover leafed designed construction, was built by Henry VIII as the third part of the defences of this stretch of coastline Walmer Castle became the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports in 1708. The Duke of Wellington enjoyed much of his 23 years of office. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, William Pitt were also Lord Wardens of the Cinque Ports amongst others, and they have all left their mark on this elegant residence. After the castles on the coast we travel to another picturesque village to stay in an old Coaching Inn built in 1602 situated in Kent . This Inn has a four poster feature bedroom that can be booked as an extra.

Penshurst

We travel to Penshurst Place and Lewes, the County Town of East Sussex, At Penshurst and group numbers permitting we spend a very practical and exciting morning with the interactive “Hands on History” group. They will present a demonstration of what it was like in Tudor times with authentic weapons, armour, clothing and food preparation. You can explore experience and enjoy the lifestyles, skills and activities of the Tudors. Penshurst is also important in the Tudor story, it was part of the divorce settlement for Anne of Cleves. Many period flims have been made here and there are currently some costumes from The Other Boleyn Girl on display. We then travel to Lewes to Anne of Cleves House, also a divorce settlement for Henry VIII’s fourth Wife in 1541. Set in the narrow roads of the County Town, the house also has charm and character of the period and you can even dress up in Tudor costume whilst you wander round the house and garden. Anne of Cleves House: Anne of Cleves House is a 15th century timber-framed Wealden hall-house that formed part of Anne's divorce settlement from Henry VIII in 1541. The house contains wide-ranging collections of Sussex interest, including Sussex pottery, and the bedroom and kitchen are furnished to reflect an earlier period. There is also a stone table with a strange tale to tell, said to be used by the three knights who murdered Thomas a Becket in 1170. Lewes Priory ruins are close by, the Priory suffered under the Dissolution and had a very large church, larger than Chichester Cathedral which we will see later There will be time to stroll around this historic county town with its own brewery, Crown Court (where you can sit in the public gallery) and some wonderful old bookshops. Lewes has a monument to the 17 Protestant martyrs who were burnt at the stake during 5 years of Queen Mary’s reign after Henry VIII’s death. We stay in Lewes at a Tudor Coaching Inn. Once again this Inn has four poster feature bedrooms that can be booked as an option. Here, Thomas Paine debated and wrote the “Rights of Man” and “Common sense” on which the US Constitution is based.

Portsmouth

We travel to Portsmouth, Hampshire. the Home of the Royal Navy. Henry VIII is regarded as the father of the Royal Navy bulding many mighty ships including the Mary Rose Southsea Castle is the exact place where Henry stood as the Mary Rose foundered in the Solent. Stand in his footsteps and think of the scene that greeted his horrified eyes. Included in the Tour is a visit to the Spinnaker Tower, an observation platform built in 2005 which is 170m (530ft) high. You can see for miles around the Solent, Portsmouth harbour and the surrounding countryside. You can see and learn more about the entire defence fortifications of the City and port built by Henry VIII. Spinnaker Tower, Hampshire - A different view every day: The Spinnaker Tower is taller than the London Eye, Blackpool Tower and Big Ben and has already established itself as a national icon for Britain. View Deck 1 boasts Europe’s largest glass floor, where visitors of all ages can dare to ‘walk on air’! View Deck 2 has self-contained multimedia ‘Time Telescope’ stations showing the history of the harbour and View Deck 3 – The Crow’s Nest – is open to the elements, enabling visitors to feel the wind in their hair. We enter the Royal Navy Dockyard to see the Mary Rose. Henry VIII’s Flagship built 1509 that sunk in the Solent in 1545 with the loss of about 800 lives. Raised in 1982 it rests inside a specially built environment to preserve it. The Ship Hall is closed until 2012 for reconstruction but you can still see via the webcam the boat itself. The museum holds more treasures taken from the ship from cannons right down to small personal objects such as lice combs.Also in The Dockyard is HMS Victory, Nelson’s Flagship at the battle of Trafalgar. Also available in the Dockyard is HMS Warrior the First Iron Clad part steam ship and sail built in 1860. This ship was state of the art and technology at the time but was made obsolete three years later by the USS Monitor during the American Civil War. After we come back down from the Spinnaker tower we will retreat to the famous Still & West pub where you can watch the harbour life and partake of traditional English fare. We stay the night in a grand hotel in Portsmouth, in view of local landmarks and Southsea Common.

Windsor

We travel to Hampton Court palace, arguably one of the most famous palaces in the world. Henry confiscated the Palace from Cardinal Wolsey in 1529 when the Cardinal failed to get the divorce Henry wanted from his first wife Catherine of Aragon to marry Anne Boleyn. The Palace is vast and has been added to over the centuries. Many notable features include the maze, gardens, a Tudor real tennis court and the Chapel Royal used for Prayer for over 450 years. At 400 years the oldest known grapevine in the world is situated here, and still producing grapes every year. After we leave Hampton Court we travel to Windsor Castle to see the largest and oldest occupied castle in Europe and still home to the present Sovereign, Queen Elizabeth II. St Georges chapel Windsor is the last resting place of 10 royal Sovereigns including Henry VIII and his favourite wife Jane Seymour. If you go to evensong at 5.15 every day you will be sitting in the chancel right next to Henry's last resting place We stay in a superb hotel on the river Thames very near to the castle; the hotel has feature bedrooms that can be booked as an option. There will be plenty of time to stroll around the Historic part of Windsor or take the long walk in Windsor Great Park.

London

The tour finishes after breakfast and transport is arranged from the hotel to the central London railway station terminals. The Changing of the Guard occurs at 11.00am every other day during the Spring and every day during the summer except Sundays in Windsor and should you wish to see this spectacle, special arrangements can be made for transfers at midday.

Kenilworth

We meet in London at the starting point of the tour and go straight to Kenilworth Warwichshire, where we see the church of St Nicholas in Old Kenilworth. Here Dudley and Elizabeth prayed together during that glorious summer progress of 1575 before we go to Kenilworth Castle. Here we gaze in wonder at the beautifully restored gardens and marvel at Duldey's passion that made him spend millions on this extravagent display of love. We spend the night at our first hotel in Old Kenilworth. For those of you who want to taste some real ale, we can visit a pub very close to hand dating back to the 1500s.

Hertfordshire

Before traveling back to north London, we visit the Earl of Leycester Hospital, commissioned by Dudley as a retirement home for Elizabeth's soldiers and their wives' and still in use as such today, again in a vain attempt to prove his suitability as a husband. We also visit Robert Dudley's last resting place in a spellbinding Gothic chapel in St Mary's church in Warwick. Hatfield House in Hertfordshire is our next stop. This is Elizabeth's childhood home and where we explore her early life, reliving the time when she was informed that she had finally become Queen of England. Scenes from Cate Blanchett's epic film "Elizabeth", were filmed at Hatfield. Here we partake of a superb evening at a Tudor banquet with entertainment and food served by wenches in the magnificent great Hall of the Old Palace where Elizabeth actually partied. We spend the night at an old Inn nearby to Hatfield .

London

After breakfast, our progress takes us to visit Tilbury Fort and the nearby scene of Elizabeth's most famous speech that put strength and heart into her troops before the Spanish Armada was set to land. "I know I have the body of a weak and feeble woman; but I have the heart and stomach of a King. And a King of England too." Robert Dudley was her Lieutenant General in the field that day. We travel to Upnor Castle near Rochester in Kent, the only castle Elizabeth commanded to be built, to continue the story of the Warrior Queen. When Elizabeth visited Upnor the immortal words, "Britannia rules the waves" were spoken for the very first time. Then on to Penshurst Place in Kent home of the Sidney family for 450 years. Henry Sidney was brother-in-law to Dudley. Penshurst is a beautiful, historic treasure. It weaves in and out of the Tudor story and was even given as a divorce settlement to Anne of Cleves. There are some fine paintings showing Elizabeth and Dudley including them dancing the scandalous "La Volta", on display in the very room that the event depicts took place. Penshurst is a much used filming venue with many costume dramas and there are some costumes currently on display from some of those films including "The Other Boleyn Girl". We stay the night in London in a hotel near to the Thames and close by the Globe theatre where we see a play during the season from April 23rd to the end of September.

We visit the Tower of London, steeped in the nation's history for nearly 1000 years, as a fortress, Royal residence and a prison, It is here Elizabeth was imprisoned by her sister Mary, finally we visit Westminster Abbey, scene of the coronation of all Englands monarchs dating back to William Conqueror and the last resting place of Elizabeth. The tour ends here at approximately 4.00pm.

We travel to Eltham Palace, the boyhood home of Henry VIII, then onto Greenwich where we change to a River boat. The River Thames was the major Royal thoroughfare in Tudor times. See Traitor’s Gate from the river as Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard would have done on their way to their cells in the Tower. The Tower of London is over 1000 years old and steeped in the nation’s history, scene of some of the bloodiest events during the Tudor period. Used by the Crown as a residence, fortress and prison, it is the execution site of two of Henry VIII’s wives, Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard. Lady Jane Grey, usurper Queen for only 9 days was also held here before execution. Sir Walter Raleigh, Elizabeth’s Chief Privateer was also executed in the Tower. A magnificent exhibition of Henry VIII’s suit of armour and horse armour are on display in the Tower, a breathtaking sight. See the 23,578 gems that make up the Crown Jewels, one of the World’s premier tourist attractions. There are dozens of amazing sights and activities at the Tower of London. The Yeoman of the Guard (Beefeaters) were instigated by Henry’s father and they still wear the same Tudor uniform. After the Tower we cross the river and walk along narrow cobbled London streets to St Mary Overie dock to go on board the Golden Hinde. This is a full size working replica of Sir Francis Drake’s famous flagship that sailed around the world 1577-1580. Get a taste of the Tudor maritime period by a guided tour of the ship. Mind your head the timber decks beams are very low!! After a fish and chip supper at the George Inn, the oldest galleried pub in London which Shakespeare frequented, we walk just a few more yards along the Thames to the Globe Theatre, Shakespeare’s theatre, rebuilt by American Actor Sam Wannamaker using traditional construction methods, close to the site of the original theatre. The season opens on Shakespeare’s birthday 23 April and runs until the end of September. There will be seasonal productions and there is no guarantee any particular play will be performed. It is a sheer delight to see one of Shakespeare's plays performed in the setting for which it was written. Out of season we have a tour of the Globe. After the theatre, we stay the night in a hotel within sight of the River Thames in the heart of London.

Dover

John Gage was Constable of the Tower of London and responsible for organising the execution of Henry's fifth wife, Catherine Howard. His descendent, General Sir Thomas Gage was the Commander in Chief of British forces during the America war of Independence 1776. There will be time to stroll around this historic county town with its own brewery, Crown Court (where you may be able to sit in the public gallery) and some wonderful old bookshops. We travel to Windsor to see the largest and oldest occupied castle in Europe and still home to the present Sovereign, Queen Elizabeth II. We should arrive in time to see the Changing of the Guard which happens every day except Sunday during the summer at 11am sharp. St Georges chapel Windsor is the last resting place of 10 royal Sovereigns including Henry VIII and his favourite wife Jane Seymour. If you like you can go to evensong at the Chapel at 5.15 every evening. We stay in a superb hotel on the river Thames very near to the castle; the hotel has featured bedrooms that can be booked as an option. For our last night of the tour we stay at an opulent Victorian boutique hotel in Central London. One of the beds was once owned by Judy Garland. It has themed and feature rooms including a Tudor room with a minstrel gallery. For the last night tour meal we go to a splendid location near to the Tower of London for a sumptuous Tudor banquet complete with entertainment. You can even hire costumes for the occasion.

Central London

We start our tour at 4.00pm when we meet at a central London hotel. After settling in, we will dine at The George, the tavern in London where Shakespeare was known to frequent and where, we ask, could he have based his balcony scene for Romeo and Juliet.

We travel south out of London to visit Hever Castle in Kent, the childhood home of Anne Boleyn. Thanks to her Henry broke from the Catholic church and the Reformation followed. Hever reflects the atmosphere of the Tudor period and there are jousting tournaments held on some days during the season. Nearby Penshurst Place is an important house in the Tudor story. It was also given to Anne of Cleves as part of her divorce settlement from Henry VIII. There are some fine paintings showing Elizabeth and Dudley including them dancing the scandalous "La Volta", on display in the very room that the event depicts took place. Penshurst is a much used filming venue with many costume dramas using the Great House, gardens and Baron’s Hall as sets. At Penshurst and group numbers permitting Hands-on-History will give a real live demonstration and re-enactment of life in Tudor Times. We then return to our London hotel.

Stamford

We travel north out of London to visit Buckden Towers, the Bishop's Palace in Cambridgeshire, where Catherine of Aragon lived before she was forcibly taken to Kimbolton Castle near Huntingdon and where she later died. Kimbolton is not generally open to the public but a special guided tour has been arranged by appointment to Tudor History Tours. We then travel to Peterborough Cathedral where Catherine is buried. Fresh flowers are always to be found laid on the simple marble slab marking her last resting place. Mary, Queen of Scots was also buried here before being exhumed and re-interred at Westminster Abbey. We spend the night at a charming riverside hotel established in 947 in Stamford.

Kenilworth

After breakfast we travel to Kenilworth Warwickshire, where we visit Kenilworth Castle. You will gaze in wonder at the beautifully restored privy gardens and marvel at Duldey's passion that made him spend millions on this extravagant display of love during that glorious summer progress of 1575. Baddesley Clinton is an atmospheric house dating from the 15th century and was the home of the Ferrers family for 500 years. The house and interiors reflect its heyday in the Elizabethan era, when it was a haven for persecuted Catholics – there are three priest's holes. There is a contemporary English Tapestry of that glorious summer progress featuring Dudley and Elizabeth and Cate Blanchet's Elizabeth the Golden Age was filmed here. If we have time we can also visit Robert Dudley's last resting place in a spellbinding Gothic chapel in St Mary's church in Warwick. We spend the night at a hotel in Old Kenilworth built around an old oak tree dating back to 1538. For those of you who want to taste some real ale, we can visit a pub very close to hand also dating back to the 1500s.

Gloucestershire

Our next stop is Coughton Court which has been home to the Throckmorton family, one of the UK’s oldest Catholic families for 600 years. Bess Throckmorton, Queen Elizabeth’s favourite Lady-in-Waiting until she married Sir Walter Raleigh without permission. There are priceless artefacts such as the chemise reputedly worn by Mary Queen of Scots when she was executed and a bishop’s Cope, with intricate needlework, believed to have been worked upon by Catherine of Aragon. We travel to Sudeley Castle in Gloucestershire , a grand manor house and the family home of Catherine Parr, Henry VIII's last wife. Catherine is buried in a peaceful setting in St Mary's church within the wonderful grounds. This splendid Castle was largely ruined by Oliver Cromwell's forces, but a part is still occupied and is in private ownership. There are numerous unusual sculptures within the grounds. We stay an historic Hotel situated on the banks of the River Dunn in the thriving market town of Hungerford. Once given to Anne of Cleves as part of the divorce settlement.

London

It’s an early start to travel to The Vyne built in the 16th century for Lord Sandys, Henry VIII's Lord Chamberlain and the “power house” of a great Tudor courtier. After the Civil War it became home to the Chute family for more than 300 years. The early 16th-century stained glass windows in the chapel feature Catherine of Aragon and Henry VIII. They were hidden in a pond during the civil war to prevent Cromwells’ troops destroying them. The upper Oak Gallery is one of the very few long galleries surviving from the first half of the 16th century and richly decorated with linen-fold oak panels with carved emblems of Henry and Catherine. We then visit Syon House where Catherine Howard was taken after her arrest in 1542 and before she was taken to the Tower of London. Syon House is a magnificent Thames-side stately home which had a turbulent history during the Tudor period. Originally an Abbey built in 1415 by Henry V, it has been the family home of the Duke of Northumberland since 1594. Lady Jane Grey was proclaimed Queen here in 1553 by her father-in-law the Duke of Northumberland. Our accommodation for the night sits on the banks of the River Thames and was used by Charles II as accommodation for royal guests at nearby Hampton Court Palace.

London

Hampton Court Palace is perhaps the most famous Palace in the English speaking world. It is the only surviving palace out of the 60 that Henry VIII built or confiscated. Henry married two of his wives here and one of them died here. We return to a central London hotel to prepare for an entertaining evening at a medieval banquet.

We spend the last day of our tour at Hatfield House close to London. The Estate has been in the Cecil family for 400 years. Henry VIII, used it as a home for his children, Edward, Elizabeth and Mary and it was Elizabeth’s childhood home. It was while she was living in the Old Palace, in 1558, that Elizabeth learned of her accession to the throne whilst she was by a tree in the deer park. Here you can see some of Elizabeth’s own clothing and letters she wrote, together with magnificent portraits of her as Queen. There is also a letter from Henry VIII complaining of how he was "badly handled" over Anne of Cleves and how unattractive he found her. He never called her "the Flander's mare". We travel back to London to end the tour and take our leave of each other.

Southwest London

We gather at the start of the tour at a riverside hotel in South West London for a tour briefing. Nearby we first visit Syon House where Catherine Howard was taken after her arrest in 1542 and before she was taken to the Tower of London. Syon House is a magnificent Thames-side stately home. It had a turbulent history during the Tudor period. Originally an Abbey built in 1415 by Henry V, in 1539 it became Crown property before finally ending up as the family home of the Duke of Northumberland in 1594. Lady Jane Grey was proclaimed Queen here in 1553 by her father-in-law the Duke of Northumberland.

Windsor

Hampton Court Palace is perhaps the most famous Palace in the English speaking world. It is the only surviving palace out of the 60 that Henry VIII built or confiscated. Henry married two of his wives here. After time spent exploring these magnificent buildings we travel to Windsor to spend the night at a Thames-side hotel, where feature rooms are available. Here we can attend evensong at St George's Chapel within the walls of Windsor Castle. Henry VIII and his favourtie wife are buried under a simple black marble slab in the Chancel.

Berkshire

After watching the Changing of the Guard at 11.00am, there will be time to wander around Windsor and visit the Castle. Windsor Castle is the largest inhabited Castle in Europe and still home to our present sovereign Queen Elizabeth II. There are many exhibitions to see here and the fabulous State Apartments hold many original portraits of the Tudors. We then go to Hungerford, a small market town deep in the heart of Berkshire where we stay at an old coaching inn given to Anne of Cleves as part of her divorce settlement from Henry VIII.

Kenilworth

We travel to Sudeley Castle in Gloucestershire , a grand manor house and the family home of Catherine Parr, Henry VIII's last wife. Catherine is buried in a peaceful setting in St Mary's church within the wonderful grounds. This splendid Castle was largely ruined by Oliver Cromwell's forces, but a part is still occupied and is in private ownership. There are numerous unusual scultpures within the grounds. We journey to Coughton Court, home of the Throckmorton family for over 600 years. They were one of the premier Catholic families of England and have a Bishop's cope made by Catherine of Aragon and her ladies. We then travel to Kenilworth in Warwickshire to spend the night in a 16th century hotel built around an oak tree.

Stamford

After breakfast we take a short walk to Kennilworth Castle where the Earl of Dudley attempted to woo Anne Boleyn's daughter, Elizabeth. Unlike her parents, this romance never resulted in marriage. We then travel to Buckden Towers, the Bishop's Palace where Catherine or Aragon lived before she was forcibly taken to Kimbolton Castle near Huntingdon and where she later died. Henry VIII and Catherine Howard also visited this Palace. Kimbolton is not generally open to the public but a special guided tour has been arranged by appointment to Tudor History Tours. We spend the night at a charming riverside hotel established in 947 in Stamford where the Knights Hospitallers slept on their way to the Holy Land nearly a thousand years ago.

Cambridge

In the morning we go to Peterborough Cathedral, unique in all of Christendom for its great West facade, where Catherine of Aragon is buried. Fresh flowers are always to be found laid on the simple marble slab marking her last resting place. Mary, Queen of Scots was also buried here before being exhumed and re-interred at Westminster Abbey. We then travel to Cambridge to see the Kings College Chapel. This building has the largest fan valuted roof construction still standing in the world. Also the chapel has another unique claim to fame, two of the wives can be found here. Anne Boleyn's initials are carved in the Provost stall and it has a tantalising image of Catherine Howard on a stained glass window placed here. There will be time to wander around the centre of Cambridge to view some of the other famous colleges, like Queens College which is associated with Catherine or Aragon before we head off to spend the night in a London hotel.

London

We visit the Tower of London, steeped in the nation's history for 1,000 years. Two of Henry's queens, Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard were executed in the Tower and their last resting places are in the chapel of St Peter and Vincula within the Tower. Also within the Tower of London are the Bloody Tower, the Wakefield Tower and the magnificant Crown Jewels of England. Westminster Abbey, the coronation site of all the Kings and Queens since William the Conqueror, and also where ten of our sovereigns are buried, is our next port of call. Elizabeth I is there and, somewhat hard to find, is the tomb of Anne of Cleves. Anne of Cleves was perhaps Henry VIII's least favoured wife when married, but they remained on friendly terms for the rest of his life. She outlived all of them and a grand funeral took her to her last resting place here at the Abbey. We spend another night at the hotel by the river Thames near the Globe theatre. In the evening we see a play here, in the lovingly created replica of Shakespeare's original Globe Theatre. The season commences on Shakespeare's birthday 23 April so, performances permitting, we will see a play set in original environment for which it was written. This will be a seasonal production and there is no guarantee that a particular play will be performed. Before the season commences, a guided tour of the Globe will take place instead of a peformance. We enjoy a fish and chip supper at the last galleried pub in London where Shakespeare met his friends and colleagues.

Kent

We travel south out of London to visit Hever Castle in Kent, the childhood home of Anne Boleyn. Perhaps one of the most famous love stories in history, Anne was considered a vivacious courtier by some, a witch by others. Thanks to her influence Henry broke from the Catholic church and the Reformation followed. Hever reflects the atmosphere of the Tudor period and there is jousting held on some days during the season. This is followed by a stop at nearby Penshurst Place, an important house in the Tudor story. It was given to Anne of Cleves as part of her divorce settlement from Henry VIII before subsequently being exchanged for another. At Penshurst and group numbers permitting Hands-on-History will give a real live demonstration and re-enactment of life in Tudor Times. You can dress up in armour, shoot arrows and may even fire a cannon! Here we experience a typical mid-day meal which would have been common in the Tudor period

Lewes

We travel to Lewes where we see Anne of Cleve's House, also part of her divorce settlement from Henry VIII. Close by are the Priory ruins, part of the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII and Lewes Castle, scene of the Battle between Henry III and Simon De Montford in 1264. Both are within easy walking distance in this medieval County town of East Sussex. There will be the opportunity to see other notable landmarks such as the famous Harvey's brewery and the monument to the Protestant martyrs burnt at the stake by Mary. We spend the night in Lewes in a town centre hotel that was originally a coaching Inn and where feature rooms are available.

Central London

We travel a short distance from Lewes to Firle village church to see the tombs of the Gage family. Sir John Gage was Constable of the Tower and responsible for organising the execution of Catherine Howard. Major General Thomas Gage was the Commander in Chief of British Forces during the American war of Independance 1776. We spend the rest of the day in Arundel visiting the Castle, ancestral home of the Howard family. Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk, was uncle to both Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard. Curiously both these wives were executed and Thomas was also due to be executed but Henry VIII died the night before Thomas's appointment with the block. Arundel castle is the second largest inhabited castle in Britain and was the inspiration behind Mervyn Peake's Gothic novel, Gormenghast. We spend the last night of the tour in a fine Victorian hotel in Central London. An end of tour sumptious Tudor banquet will be our final event together.

London

The tour finishes after a leisurely breakfast when transport is arranged to a London mainline railway station. Extra visits to other London sites such as the British Museum and the National Portrait Gallery can be arranged if requested before the tour starts.

Rome

Today you arrive in Rome and have time to settle in before meeting up with your fellow-travellers in the early evening for the first of many delicious meals, as we head out to a local trattoria to experience the local Italian cuisine.

Rome

Few cities have had such an influence on the world as Rome and, whilst it might no longer be “caput mundi” (capital of the world) it remains a city of huge historical significance. We discover its illustrious antiquity as we explore its multitude of attractions. Be overwhelmed by the plethora of famous sites and monuments as our local guide takes us through the city, in truth an outdoor museum. We hear about the history of Rome as we explore all the famous sites such as the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, the Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, the Roman Forum and the Colosseum. There will be free time this afternoon for you to further explore the city at your own pace, and tonight is yours to enjoy the local culinary delights and appreciate Rome by night, all the more cosy at this time of year.

Rome

This morning we visit the Vatican Museum, a complex of different pontifical museums which were built to promote knowledge of the arts and history. Here we find some of the greatest artistic masterpieces in the world, spectacular archaeological finds and the rich Gallery of Tapestries. A must-see highlight is of course Michelangelo’s monumental artistic achievement, the painted ceiling in the Sistine Chapel. After lunch we head out of the city for a guided tour of another famous and ancient site, the underground cemeteries known as the Catacombs. Dinner is at your leisure and your guide can offer some great local recommendations.

Perugia

Leaving Rome we travel the scenic route along the Via Salaria (the ancient salt route), stopping at historic towns along the way. Our first is the picturesque town of Rieti, whose cathedral dates back to the 12th century and features a Romanesque bell tower. We also visit Spoleto, the home of the arresting Albornozian Castle, whose hilltop position offers an incredible view over the town and surrounding valley. Later this afternoon we marvel at the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi, dating back to the 13th century and one of the most important places of Christian pilgrimage in Italy. Tonight we stay in Perugia, a lively medieval walled town, famous for its chocolates.

Volterra

Today we travel through the countryside as we head for Tuscany, renowned for its exquisite art, food and wine. This region has been attracting visitors for decades and the benefit of winter is the often brilliantly clear days to admire the magnificent views, the uncrowded tourist hotspots and the opportunity to experience the ‘real Tuscany’ such as local meals in front of a roaring fire and Christmas festivities. We start our Tuscan journey by visiting the beautiful San Gimignano, known as ‘The City of Towers’, a well-preserved medieval town with its impressive ramparts dominating the landscape. We then head to Siena where we explore its famous sites, including the Palazzo Pubblico, a fine example of Italian medieval and Gothic architecture and of course the Piazza del Campo (which appears in the James Bond film Quantum of Solace), where the Palio horse race takes place annually, arguably the most beautiful arena in Italy. Finally we arrive in the delightful medieval hilltop town of Volterra, with its mysterious network of winding alleys and laid back atmosphere. Try the wild boar for dinner – one of the local specialities!

Volterra

It is a dramatic drive to Florence, the home of Renaissance art and architecture. We experience a wonderful walking tour with our local guide, which takes us to some of the city’s most remarkable sites. We see the Ponte Vecchio (the medieval bridge over the River Arno), the medieval Palazzo Vecchio, the Duomo Cathedral, the Piazza della Signoria and the famous church of Santa Croce – the burial place of some of the most illustrious Italians including Michelangelo, Galileo and Machiavelli. Enjoy the views over Florence this afternoon as we return to Volterra for an evening of leisure for you to enjoy as you wish.

Lucca

This morning we journey to ancient Pisa, whose famous Leaning Tower needs no introduction. This 12th century freestanding bell tower seems to defy gravity and has been attracting visitors for many years, and the more adventurous might want to take the climb. We view the adjoining cathedral, the Baptistery and the decorated Campo Santo, or ‘Holy Field.’ Get your cameras ready as we travel to the charming city of Lucca, probably the most spectacular walled town in Italy. Explore the ancient walls of the town, and discover the house where Puccini was born, the quirky Torre Guinigi and more! Tonight we enjoy another delicious evening meal together.

Venice

Today we take the back roads and enjoy a dramatic drive over the Apennine Mountains to Ravenna, where you might want to take an optional tour of San Vitale and see its fabulous Byzantine mosaics. We then reach the incredible city of Venice, rising out of the lagoon. Venice is best travelled on the water, so sit back and enjoy a vaporetto ride to our hotel, located on Venice Island itself. Tonight after dinner you might want to take a delightful evening stroll through this romantic city, or perhaps you might choose to take a gondola ride on the magnificent Grand Canal.

Venice

This morning we fully immerse ourselves in this splendid city as we explore its iconic sites and monuments on a guided walking tour, without the throngs of visitors who flock to the city in summer. We watch daily Venetian life pass by in St Mark’s Square, visit the gleaming Basilica, the most famous cathedral church in the city, view the Campanile (bell tower) and the Gothic Doges Palace. Venice is a labyrinth of canals crossed by beautiful bridges, and we will visit some of its most attractive, including the Bridge of Sighs and the Rialto Bridge as we wind through the city. The afternoon is free for you to continue your enthralling exploration of the city. Perhaps choose to take a boat ride out to the picturesque islands of Burano, famous for its lace-making and colourful buildings or Murano with its world-renowned glass-works which produce the famous ‘Murano Glass’.

Como

Leaving Venice behind, we head to romantic Verona, famous for Juliet’s Balcony from Shakespeare’s play ‘Romeo & Juliet’ and its many well-preserved archaeological sites. We explore the city, including the colossal Roman amphitheatre, the Arena, the picturesque Piazza delle Erbe, the Madonna Verona fountain and Tower Lamberti. This afternoon offers a contrast from the bustle as we enter the serene lakes region of northern Italy, nestled in the foothills of the Alps and surrounded by beautiful old villas scattered along the lakeside. We stay in the historic walled town of Como, where we have some time to explore the old town and its 400-year-old buildings and ancient churches.

Como

After breakfast we set out towards the Valtellina, a beautiful Alpine valley boasting stunning landscapes, mountain peaks and glaciers alongside ancient towns and villages. Our destination is Tirano, where we take the famous ‘Bernina Express’ train through fabulous scenery as it winds and climbs its way to St Moritz in Switzerland. This is the only railway line across the Alps without a tunnel, and it is a breathtaking journey, offering incomparable views of the Alpine landscape. As we journey back to Como, we might have time to make a short stop in Chiavenna, a charming little village in the foothills of the Alps.

Milan

Today we leave the grandeur of the lakes behind and head south to Milan, Italy’s famous fashion capital where the city is as beautiful as its people. We will take a walk around the city and appreciate its glamour as we pass by amongst other attractions the impressive Gothic cathedral and La Scala, Italy’s most famous opera house. The rest of the day is at your leisure – maybe wander through the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, the world’s most beautiful shopping mall, or try and secure a last-minute ticket to the opera.

Milan

Your tour finishes after breakfast. Depending on when your flight leaves, there is an opportunity to shop or for further sightseeing.

Bern

Departing Geneva, sit back and relax as we take in the sights of St. Peter’s Cathedral, the Place du Bourge-de-Four, the Jet d’Eau – a fountain with a 140-metre-high water jet at the periphery of Lake Geneva and Horloge Fleuri , the large flower clock in the Jardin Anglais, the world-renowned symbol of the Geneva watch industry. We travel to Montreux and the heart of the Swiss Riviera. Here we explore the Château de Chillon and its medieval Christmas Market. Our next stop will be Gruyère, famous for its cheese, produced here since 1115. We visit this charming village, and the fairytale castle decked out for the winter season, and perhaps see the nativity scenes brought over from Austria and the Tirol region. Our final stop today is Bern, the capital of Switzerland, where we enjoy a traditional Swiss dinner.

Lucerne

After breakfast our guided tour of Bern begins. The attraction of this city is its ambience; traffic is kept out of the old town and the perfectly preserved medieval street plan, with its arcades, street fountains and impressive towers have made it a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Even though it is the capital of the country it is really a provincial town and is packed with character and charm. Let’s not forget the Christmas Market! Continuing on, we arrive in Lucerne, the “essence of Switzerland”. We take a tour of the city, visiting the famous Chapel Bridge, Ritterscher Palace, Spreuer Bridge and the Lion Monument. Afterwards we stop in the Old City Square to admire the historical buildings clad in frescoes and to soak up the atmosphere.

Lucerne

Today we travel by cable car to Mount Titlis. At 10,000ft, it is the highest viewpoint in the Lake Lucerne region. Going up to the top in the world’s first revolving gondola is like being an eagle exploring this immense landscape. Once at the top we take in the crisp mountain air and eye-popping views and enjoy lunch on top of the world. Travelling down the mountain to the village of Engelberg we see its imposing monastery and the collegiate church. Here we take a walking tour and visit the monastery, where the Benedictine monks have been producing a spicy cheese since the 16th century. We might even have the opportunity to produce a little of our own. Afterwards, back to Lucerne where the remainder of the day is yours to enjoy.

Davos Region

Today we have a special treat. We embark on one of the great train journeys of Europe - the Glacier Express*. We stop for a hot chocolate in Andermatt where there is time to take a look around the town before embarking on our great journey today. The train journey is a spell-binding one as we travel through the dramatic Alpine countryside to take in the unique views from a different perspective. This is a journey with wow-factor! Arriving in Davos, enjoy exploring this pretty alpine town with its quaint streets, gourmet restaurants and traditional pubs.

St Moritz/Davos

We head out to the Alpine hideaway of St. Moritz, one of the world’s most famous holiday resorts. Chic, elegant, exclusive, it has a sparkling “champagne climate”. Here we have an opportunity to peek inside the life of luxury enjoyed by the jet-setters. Perhaps a little mingling, eating, drinking and shopping? Afterwards, we explore the beautiful Engadine Valley before returning to Davos.

Appenzell

Today we travel to the quaint town of St. Gallen, considered one of the seven wonders of Switzerland. We tour this quaint town, known for its burgher houses and colourfully painted oriel windows dating back to the 16th & 18th centuries, its landmark cathedral and the abbey library famed for its ancient documents. After lunch, we head to ‘Schoggi Land’ and visit the Maestrani Chocolate Factory. As we arrive, the scent of chocolate fills the air! Maestrani himself had a wonderful quote, ‘He who sees the world through the eyes of a chocolate lover will find real beauty and enjoyment’. Any chocolate lover can attest to that! We see how chocolate originated and what made it into the delectable indulgence it is today. Then on to Appenzell where we enjoy a traditional Swiss dinner.

Zurich

Before ending our tour, we have a bit of free time to explore this lovely village with its houses with richly decorated facades. Maybe do a little last minute shopping or just relax and take it all in. We return to Zurich where our tour ends.

Kufstein

Arriving in Munich, meet with your fellow passengers at the hotel and prepare for your winter adventure. As we leave the bustling city behind, we travel along the Bavarian country roads to Schwangau for what will be the first of many impressive stops. Rising almost to the clouds is the fairytale castle of Neuschwanstein. Commissioned by Ludwig II in 1869 and paying homage to Richard Wagner, it was intended as a personal retreat for the reclusive king. Sadly it was never completed when Ludwig died under mysterious circumstances in 1886. Soon after his death, it was turned into a tourist attraction and has made an appearance in many films and was the inspiration of Sleeping Beauty’s Castle at Disneyland. Continuing on our journey, we leave Germany and Bavaria behind and enter Austria and the Tirol region characterised by its rugged, mountainous landscape and beautiful valleys. We stop for lunch where you can have your first experience of Austrian food before continuing on to the quaint city of Kufstein. Known as the “fortress town”, it is surrounded by meadows, woods and lakes and dominated by the mighty mountain range of the Kaiser. The charm and attraction of this town lies in its various contrasts: centuries-old culture competes with impressive nature. We arrive at our hotel where there is time to relax before our welcome dinner.

Kufstein

Today, we take a short journey to Salzburg, “the city of Mozart”. Located on the banks of the Salzach River and bordering the Alps on the north, it is what one might call picture perfect! The old town is dominated by its baroque towers and churches and massive Festung Hohensalzburg (fortress). Mozart lived here for some time and you can see his influence throughout the city. We take a tour of the city and see why this has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Enjoy a local Austrian lunch with the group then spend some time exploring more of Salzburg at your own pace. Perhaps shop for handicrafts at one of the Christmas Markets, maybe eat some gingerbread or drink some mulled wine? We then return to Kufstein for a relaxing evening.

Vienna

We leave the Tirol region and continue our tour to Vienna. Our first stop has a sobering effect as we visit the former Nazi concentration camp at Mauthausen. It was one of the largest labour camps in Europe during World War II. As we walk around the camp and adjoining quarry, we learn more about the horrendous life the prisoners were forced to endure during the war and the shocking human experimentation that took place here. Our mood lightens as we travel along the Danube River through some spectacular winter countryside in the region. We stop at the delightful town of Melk, home of the famous Benedictine Monastery which features an impressive library with countless medieval manuscripts, including a famous collection of musical manuscripts and frescoes by Paul Troger. We arrive in Vienna with its magnificent imperial buildings, famous palaces and atmospheric concert halls. Tonight we enjoy dinner at a traditional restaurant for an Austrian feast!

Vienna

After breakfast, we enjoy a morning guided tour and discover why this city is so internationally revered. We follow the “Ringstrasse” and see the Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Natural History, the Vienna Opera House, the Hofburg and Parliament. As we continue our city tour, we see what is considered the most famous site of Vienna: St. Stephen’s Cathedral – the “heart” of Vienna. We may see the Spanische Hofreitschule, the Spanish Riding School, and one of the most significant cultural monuments in Austria, the SchÅ‘nbrunn Palace, one of the homes of the Habsburg rulers. This afternoon taste the local wine at one of the local wineries.

Vienna

This morning we drive to an area of natural beauty, away from Vienna and into the wine country to view more of the the Austrian countryside and learn more about the vibrant wine industry, tasting a few locally produced wines. This afternoon we return to the city so you can explore it further at your leisure. Perhaps visit the Christmas Markets, stroll through one of the palaces, take in one of the museums or do a little shopping. For something different, why not visit the Schokomuseum (Chocolate Museum)? Make sure you pause for a coffee at one of the many coffee houses for which Vienna is famous or perhaps learn the secrets of making Strudel at the Court Bakery of Schönbrunn Castle. Our time in Vienna would not be complete without experiencing what Vienna is well known for – Music. This evening dinner is followed by a concert at Schönbrunn Palace Orangery including the most beautiful works written by Mozart and Strauss. A perfect ending to our tour!

Vienna

Cambridgeshire/Suffolk

Leaving London, on our first day we journey into Cambridgeshire, a charming region best known for its rolling countryside, quaint villages, cathedral cities and myriad of waterways. Enveloped in an atmosphere of learning, we wander through the streets of Cambridge, an attractive and fascinating city, where in-term time we experience the buzz of student life as we take in the historic courts and gardens of its famous colleges before arriving at our charming hotel.

Lincoln

We travel north along the Norfolk border today towards the medieval city of Lincoln. On the way we visit the old city of Ely, home to one of England’s largest and most striking cathedrals, dominating the skyline. We continue to the house of Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector of England after the Civil war. His residence has been recreated to show how the family would have lived in the mid-17th century. Our ultimate destination for today is Lincoln, characterised by its soaring Norman cathedral, Roman ruins, Viking artefacts, and cobbled Tudor streets. The medieval square is the perfect setting for the traditional Christmas Markets (the first Germanic style markets in the UK) during the festive season (Dec) and where you can buy unique gifts and taste delicious local treats.

York

Today, we take a journey through the Lincolnshire Wolds – Tennyson country. Here we wind through country vistas and lesser-known villages to discover why this region is revered as an area of outstanding natural beauty. We stop in picturesque local villages which might include Tealby or Old Bollingbroke – the birthplace of King Henry IV. We then travel on to the medieval city of York. A fabulous destination any time of year, York is renowned for its exquisite architecture, its tangle of quaint cobbled streets and the iconic York Minster. There is opportunity to amble through the city streets before our evening meal together at a local restaurant.

York

Today is a free day to explore this elegant city. York is home to one of the most impressive Gothic Cathedrals in the world, and is a must-see for anyone visiting this area. Talk a walk through the Old City, including the city walls, and visit the York Castle Museum, The National Rail Museum, The Yorvik (Viking) Centre or Clifford’s Tower and the collection of restored Guild Halls and houses. Maybe do some shopping at the Christmas Market or along the Shambles, possibly the oldest shopping street in Europe. Take afternoon tea at Betty’s Café Tea Rooms. The day is yours to enjoy.

Northumberland

The North-East has some of Britain’s most dramatic landscape which unravels as we journey alongside the Pennine Hills and through the Yorkshire Dales towards Durham. We stop in the historic town of Richmond, the site of a well-preserved castle and reputed to be the resting place of the legendary King Arthur. We then continue to the university city of Durham with its ancient cobbled streets, Norman cathedral and 11th century castle. Over winter it will be alight with Christmas decorations and will host traditional Christmas Markets. From here we continue to the heart of rural northern England where we spend the night in another hotel full of character.

Edinburgh

Our final day will see us crossing over into Scotland but not before stopping at the Roman Empire’s northernmost frontier, Emperor Hadrian’s famous wall. We visit one of its Roman sites to give us an insight into Britain’s Roman past before travelling where they did not – over the wild Border Country and into Scotland. Stepping back in time, we visit the huge ruins of the 12th century Augustinian abbey at Jedburgh, which remains an impressive structure despite the ravages of war and weather before continuing to our final destination – Edinburgh, where our tour comes to an end. Make sure you try the haggis and a dram of whisky before you leave!

Chinon

Leaving Paris we soon arrive in the Loire Valley. Our first stop is the city of Chartres where we visit the Cathédrale de Notre-Dame de Chartres - considered to be the finest example of Gothic architecture in France and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here we find the Sancta Camisia, said to be the tunic worn by the Virgin Mary at the time of Christ’s birth, and perfectly preserved stained glass windows. Continuing on, we travel to the heart of the Loire Valley, Chinon, a picturesque and historical town and the birthplace of the great French writer Rabelais. Explore the town along its medieval cobbled streets and soak up local French life. If there is time, wander up to the castle overlooking the town and take in the impressive views over the Loire valley. You are free this evening to dine at your leisure.

Chinon

Our day starts with a visit to the Abbey of Fontevraud, one of the largest monastic complexes in Europe with an interesting past. It contains the tombstone effigies of the English kings Henry II and Richard the Lionheart. Next we visit the arts and crafts village of Turquant to sample some of the lesser-known but delicious wines of the region from the local wine producers. Time permitting we may be able to explore some of the ancient and fascinating troglodyte dwellings for which the area is famous. Onward towards Saumur, one of the Loire Valley’s most “comfortable” towns. Elegantly bourgeois, it is dominated by its graceful château which sits alongside the Loire River and it is home to some world famous wineries. Explore at leisure before we return to Chinon. Tonight we have dinner together at one of Chinon’s restaurants and enjoy some of the best of French cuisine.

Cheverny

We appreciate the off-peak season as we visit some of the crowd-pleasing sites today. Our first stop today is the 16th century château of Azay-le-Rideau – an enchanting hidden gem and one of the best examples of a grandiose château in the region. Built on an island, it is a fairytale castle in a perfect setting. We continue on to the Château de Villandry. This Renaissance château epitomises elegance, with beautiful 18th century interiors and an unmissable ornamental garden – still worth visiting in winter. Our final visit of the day is to the ever impressive Château de Chenonceau, more popularly known as the “Ladies’ Château”. Here we step back in time to experience how 16th century nobility lived. During the Christmas season it will be bedecked in Scottish tartan in tribute to Marie Stuart, the tragic Mary Queen of Scots. Tonight is a real highlight as we settle into our very own Loire château, our memorable base for the next two nights.

Cheverny

Today our first port of call is the beautiful Château de Cheverny, a jewel among the more famous monuments stretching along the Loire Valley. Built in the 17th century, it presents an immaculate picture of symmetry, harmony and aristocratic good life - descendants of the first owners still own the palace and live here. The interior decoration is an extravagant display of paintings, furniture, tapestries and armour against the gilded, sculpted and carved walls and ceilings. If time permits, there might be an opportunity today to visit Clos Lucé, the final home of Leonardo da Vinci. On the way back to our château hotel, we catch glimpses of the ever-impressive Château de Chambord through the forest.

Paris

We begin our journey back to Paris and make a stop in Blois, packed with animated streets, paved squares, restaurants and taverns. We follow its winding streets to its central attraction – the Château de Blois, and learn about its long history of aristocratic intrigue and bloody royal politics. Saving the best for last, our final stop is the Palace of Fontainebleau. Located in the heart of a seventeen thousand hectare forest, it was once the privileged residence of the sovereigns who ruled France. The love of the hunt made it into a regularly visited residence and all its occupants throughout the centuries had their hearts set on improving it through new buildings or new decorations. Napoleon Bonaparte was the last person to put his mark on the palace in the 18th century and what you see today is that end result. At the end of another memorable day we return to Paris.

Cotswolds

Relax as we travel through beautiful English countryside to the most famous university city in the world, Oxford. Here we enjoy a walk amongst the golden-stone buildings and ‘dreaming spires’ to Christ Church, one of its grandest colleges whose famous students include the philosopher John Locke, the comedy writer Richard Curtis, Albert Einstein and Lewis Carroll (this is where he wrote Alice in Wonderland). Christ Church’s Great Hall and cloisters were also recently used in the Harry Potter films. This afternoon is a feast for literary enthusiasts and history buffs as we visit Shakespeare’s Stratford-Upon-Avon to discover Ye Olde England of the Bard’s birth and his final resting place, Holy Trinity Church. After a short drive to his wife Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, we meander through country lanes that take us through more honey-coloured villages and towns, littered with atmospheric churches and traditional country inns. We arrive at this evening’s accommodation in a beautiful Cotswold town and a delightful welcome dinner.

Cotswolds

After breakfast we travel through yet more picturesque countryside on our way to the city of Gloucester, a city with a unique history from its Roman foundations to its Victorian Docklands. We visit its famous cathedral, founded in 1300, whose architecture varies from the Norman nave with its massive columns to examples of Romanesque and early Perpendicular. Most recently it was made famous as Hogwarts School for Wizards and Witches in the Harry Potter films. Here we take some time to explore the history and culture of this fascinating town and perhaps do a little shopping at the Christmas Market (Nov-Dec). After lunch, we traverse the gentle timeless hills of the Cotswolds, stopping in the picturesque village of Ross-on- Wye with its impressive 17th century Market Hall and Tudor timbered houses. We stop at Goodrich Castle which has stood the test of time for nearly 1000 years! The ruins that remain are those of a castle that was built in the late 1130s in the reign of King Stephen. Tonight back to our hotel in the Cotswolds.

Cotswolds

We head out today after breakfast to visit the picture-perfect village of Lacock. Both the timeless village and its abbey have been used in countless television and movie productions including Pride and Prejudice, The Other Boleyn Girl and Harry Potter. And then we reach the splendid Georgian city of Bath. Listed as a World Heritage Site, Bath is truly one of Europe’s most attractive cities, boasting the highest concentration of listed buildings anywhere in the British Isles. Dine in a local pub for lunch then spend the afternoon exploring this city, where you can learn more about Roman life at the restored Roman Baths and visit the towering 15th century Abbey and Georgian Royal Crescent. Literary enthusiasts may visit the Jane Austen Centre which offers a snapshot of life during Regency times and explores how living in this magnificent city affected her life and writing. After a day of exploring, we return to our Cotswolds village and dine in a local restaurant.

Stonehenge / Windsor Castle

A change of pace today as we travel across Salisbury Plain to visit the great mystical stone circle at Stonehenge. Dating back to 3100 BC, there are many lively debates as how this stone circle was built and why. Hear more about these theories and make up your own as we enjoy the walking commentary tour. Then onwards to the glorious city of Salisbury to admire the tallest cathedral spire, where we might enjoy a local lunch. Our final destination for today before returning to London is a regal discovery as we visit the world’s largest occupied and oldest garrisoned fortress, Windsor Castle –official residence of the Queen. Windsor Castle dates back to William the Conqueror and has been expanded and fortified under each successive monarch to the grand construction you see today. Wander through the magnificent State Apartments and St George’s Chapel, the burial place of ten monarchs, and admire the rooms that were recently restored to their former glory. We then return to London.

Rome

Spend today acquainting yourself with “The Eternal City”. Rome is a vivid mix of past and present, and you will be seduced by the considerable charms of the world’s biggest open-air museum. In the early evening we will meet up and head out for our first dinner together, where we can get to know each other before our fascinating tour begins.

Rome

This morning we meet our local guide who introduces us to the many famous attractions found in this wonderful city. Discover such icons as the Colosseum, where gladiators once fought, and the Roman Forum, once the heart and soul of the ancient city. Toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain to ensure that, as legend has it, you will return to Rome one day! See the Pantheon, and climb the Spanish Steps - the longest and widest staircase in Europe. This afternoon you are free to make further explorations at your leisure, or perhaps you would prefer to watch the world go by as you enjoy a glass of wine or an espresso in one of the many pavement cafes.

Naples

Today we take the train south to Naples, a lively and vibrant city full of wonderful historical and artistic treasures, nestled around the beautiful Bay of Naples. We travel to the west of the city to the fascinating Phlegraean Fields, which means “burning fields”, a stunning volcanic landscape where myths and legends abound. Once believed to be the entrance to the underworld, this land of ancient volcanoes was supposedly where Hercules and the gods defeated the Titans. We visit ancient Cumae, the first Greek colony to be established on the Italian mainland and home of the famed Cumaean Sibyl. Legend has it that the Sibyl of Cumae, a soothsayer and a mortal revered as a goddess, gained her powers from Apollo the Greek sun god, who fell in love with her. There are extensive Greek and Roman ruins in the area, and the cavern where the Sybil is said to have uttered her prophecies can still be seen. We then return to the buzzing city of Naples, which is the home of the pizza. As you walk around the city, the delicious aroma of wood-burning ovens and freshly-baked pizza is never far away. Tonight we go to a typical Neopolitan pizzeria for dinner!

Naples

Today we board a ferry and sail to the lovely island of Capri, lying in the blue waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea, off the Sorrento peninsula. Capri has been a popular resort since the days of Ancient Rome. The Emperor Tiberius built a series of villas here and eventually ran the Roman Empire from his island base. The township offers a wide choice of exclusive shopping, cafes and restaurants. The smaller and quieter Anacapri is situated on a plateau above the main town. From here you might want to take the chair-lift up to the top of Monte Solaro to enjoy the views, or perhaps look at the remains of Tiberius’s palace where, it is said, he threw his enemies over the cliffs! Very popular with visitors is the Grotta Azzurra, or Blue Grotto, where sunlight passing through an underwater cavity creates incredibly intense blue tones inside the cavern. We have plenty of time to take in the delights of the island, and you have free time to make your own explorations. After a memorable day, we board the ferry back to Naples, where the evening is yours to spend as you wish.

Paestum

This morning we enjoy a guided tour of some of the treasures the city of Naples has to offer, before heading south out of the city to the incredible remains of the town of Pompeii, destroyed by Mount Vesuvius so many years ago. On 24 August in AD 79 the usually dormant volcano burst open, spewing out poisonous fumes and sending a rain of ash and rock over the surrounding countryside. The onslaught lasted three days, and when it ended the town was utterly devastated and covered by volcanic deposits more than twenty feet in depth which, over time, solidified and preserved everything within it. Vesuvius still broods in the distance, a reminder of the power of nature – a fascinating and memorable visit. We then make our way further into Southern Italy and reach the ancient Greco-Roman city of Paestum, home to three Doric temples which are considered to be the best-preserved Greek temples in the whole world. Tomorrow we explore these wonderful ancient monuments, but for now we settle into our accommodation and enjoy dinner together and sample the local food and wine.

Paestum

UNESCO-listed Paestum is a secret gem hidden away from the main tourist track just waiting to be discovered. Often quiet and almost deserted, looking at the gleaming white marble temples against the backdrop of the mountains is a wonderful and unique experience. One of the region’s most iconic sights, it is absolutely not to be missed. Originally called Poseidonia by the Greeks in honour of the god of the sea, the town was once one of the richest and most flourishing Greek colonies in southern Italy. An important trading port until the fall of the Roman Empire, outbreaks of malaria and savage Saracen raids ultimately led to Paestum being abandoned. Our local guide brings this magnificent and important historical site to life. Next a change of pace as we explore another great icon of the region – mozzarella cheese. Made from buffalo milk, this is one of the world’s most celebrated cheeses. There is nothing better than tasting freshly-made “mozzarella di bufala”, which is precisely what we do! Our explorations of the wonderful Campanian countryside continue as we experience the delights of the Cilento National Park, stretching for 100 kilometres along the coastline – sandy beaches and beautiful bays, varied landscapes and a diversity of animals and plants, it is a wonderful way to spend the afternoon.

Amalfi

Today as we make our way to the glorious Amalfi Coast, an area of outstanding beauty with a unique natural landscape. The steep cliffs plunge steeply down to the sea, which boasts charming coves, pretty bays and delightful little beaches. Pastel-coloured houses follow the natural slopes of the landscape, and all the while there is the pervading scent of the lemon groves which proliferate. While we are here we must of course taste the local speciality “limoncello”, a strong and very tasty lemon-based liqueur. The villages of the Amalfi Coast are collectively known as “pearls”, thirteen in all, and we will call in first at Vietri sul Mare, famous across the world for its hand-painted and vividly-coloured ceramics. Built on a small promontory in a protected corner of the Gulf of Salerno, it gives us fabulous views and is a delightful start to our day. Then on to Minori, a picturesque little town nestled between the blue sea and the abundant citrus groves, with a pretty harbour lying in a beautiful cove. There is more to come as we stop a while in yet another “pearl”, the lovely fishing town of Cetara, once colonised by the Saracens - nowadays it specialises in fishing for tuna and anchovy. We arrive at our base for the next two nights, the town of Amalfi itself. Now a charming and peaceful resort town, Amalfi also remains a working town with real character, once a very important maritime power. Narrow and steep alleyways and back-streets wind up and down the town, and we come across medieval architecture with Moorish influences, historic archways, a bustling waterfront and enticing shops.

Amalfi

This morning we head to Ravello, a gorgeous little town perched high on the cliffs, famous for its spectacular views and its two fabulous villas with their stunning panoramic gardens. First we explore the wonderful Villa Rufolo, whose beautiful grounds were the inspiration for the setting of Wagner’s opera “Parsifal”. Every year in July these gardens host the world-famous “Wagner Festival”. The villa dates back to the 13th century when it was built for the wealthy and powerful Rufolo family. Falling into a state of disrepair as the years went by, after the family lost its wealth and influence and was forced to sell the property, these beautiful buildings were finally restored to their former splendour in the 19th century. The Villa Cimbrone occupies the most stunning position on the whole of the Amalfi coastline, perched high above the ocean, many famous visitors including Winston Churchill, Virginia Woolf and Greta Garbo have visited here. Not only offering “the most beautiful panorama in the world” according to Gore Vidal, the villa’s gardens are full of wonderful statues, temples, fountains and grottos, culminating in the spectacular “Belvedere of Infinity” from where the views are just incredible. After a wonderful day we return to Amalfi, where the rest of the day and evening is yours to spend as you wish.

Amalfi

Our first destination today is the captivating town of Positano, once a fishing settlement and now a resort famous for its expensive hotels and boutiques as well as its picturesque winding alleyways and its pretty pastel-coloured houses. We spend some time here before heading further down the peninsula to Sorrento, located over steep white cliffs and looking out over the Bay of Naples and brooding Vesuvius. Sorrento is a hugely popular resort attracting visitors from all over the world, but it is also a great place to do a little last-minute shopping and to sample local “limoncello” in one of the many specialist shops. Wander along the lanes full of flowers, to explore the shady paths by the cliff edge or to stop at a terrace bar or cafe with astounding views across the bay. A wonderfully lazy way to spend our last afternoon. We return to Amalfi after a delightful day, and tonight we gather for dinner as our tour draws to a close.

Naples

After a leisurely start we wind our way back to Naples, where we say goodbye to our travelling companions. Perhaps you are heading straight home, or maybe you are planning to spend more time exploring the different facets of Italy. Whichever the case, you will have fond memories of the south of Italy and its many and varied attractions.

Dijon

We leave the buzz of Paris behind and head south, our first stop is the magnificent palace of Fontainebleau standing in the heart of a vast forest in the Ile-de-France. Home to the kings of France since the 12th century, it boasts a wealth of architectural treasures and precious objects, here you will experience a true sense of history as we explore this famous and iconic landmark. Heading further south we enter the region of Burgundy and Chablis, home to some of the worlds most famous wines. We visit the village of Chablis, surrounded by vineyards with delightfully romantic names, here we taste the delicious wine and learn more about the grapes from our local expert. We continue on through Burgundy, and to Dijon, considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in France. Perhaps best-known today for its eponymous mustard, which is still produced locally. The town has a delightfully-preserved medieval centre and a wealth of museums as well as great restaurants and wine bars, and tonight we sample its fine cuisine together.

Dijon

This morning we set out from Dijon to explore the delightful “Route des Vins” of the Beaune wine region, where so many famous dénominations can be found. The area boasts a wealth of prestigious names such as Nuits-Saint-Georges, Pommard, Gevrey-Chambertin and Chassagne-Montrachet - music to the ears of all wine lovers! The pretty and thriving village of Beaune is the unofficial capital of the Côte d’Or, and lies at the heart of the Wine Road. Beaune is thought to be one of the best places in France for wine tasting. However, it is not only a haven for wine, here you will find the magnificent Hôtel-Dieu, the most splendid medieval charity hospital to be found in France and a marvel of Burgundian-Flemish art. We spend time exploring this pretty town and have the opportunity to sample the local produce as we listen to our wine expert tell us more about the region. After a leisurely day exploring the delights of this region, we return to Dijon where you have the evening free to dine in one of the many excellent eateries.

Colmar

After a delightful stay in the heart of Burgundy, today we move further east towards the region of Alsace, which has at different times in history been a territory of both France and Germany and the influences of both countries are reflected here in its language, architecture, customs, traditions and cuisine. Our route takes us through the ancient city of Besançon, full of little historical gems, where from the Citadelle there are magnificent views of the forested countryside. We then follow the stunning Vallée du Doubs with its spectacular scenery, cascading waterfalls and grottos. The Gorge du Doubs, lying between the towns of Morteau and Monteliard, is simply stunning. We make our way to lovely Colmar, a town full of Alsacien history and artistic wealth as well as being the centre of an important wine region. This quaint town is an absolute delight and you have plenty of time to explore tomorrow, but tonight we enjoy a local Alsacien dinner together, washed down with fragrant Gewürztraminer or tasty Riesling. Strongly based on Germanic culinary traditions, the most famous gastronomic symbol of the region is undoubtedly sauerkraut, or “choucroute” in French, the tasty slow-cooked white cabbage, which we will no doubt sample.

Colmar

The day is yours to spend as you wish in this delightful corner of France. Explore the old town with its picturesque timbered houses, take a canal ride around “Little Venice”, scour the delightful little shops for gifts, or enjoy tasting the local brews and wines in one of the many cafes and bars. A visit to the Unterlinden Museum, home to several masterpieces including paintings by Holbein, Renoir and Picasso is a must. Colmar is a jewel of a town, and around every corner there is something interesting to see or do.

Colmar

This morning we make our way to Strasbourg, the capital city of the European Union and a symbol of reconciliation between the people of Europe. The city, lying at the “crossroads of Europe”, is full of art, boasts one of the finest gothic cathedrals in Europe, offers superb shopping and has excellent restaurants. As we make our way back to Colmar, we take a detour to Obernai, a charming town with traditional half-timbered houses. Another fascinating day in the heart of Alsacien France.

Nancy

We leave Alsace behind and follow the Route des Crêtes, a strategic road built during the First World War to carry supplies over the mountains. Once the object of bitter fighting, today it offers amazing panoramic views of the Vosges Mountains and even the Black Forest of Germany. Our journey continues through the lovely Vosges Forest scenery as we continue on to the town of Nancy, the artistic and intellectual capital of the region of Lorraine, and formerly the capital of the Dukes of Lorraine. Famous for its Art Nouveau style of architecture, the city is quite different in character to Alsace, though Lorraine has been equally subject to German influences throughout history.

Épernay

Today we call in at the pretty and busy city of Metz, on the banks of the Moselle River. The city is effectively two towns, the original French quarter located around the magnificent cathedral, and the elegant and grand “German Town” with its clear Germanic influences. Metz was hugely important in France’s defences against the Germans, and the city is ringed by forts which formed part of the Maginot Line. Our final destination today is Épernay, home to many of the world’s most famous champagne houses such as Moët et Chandon, Mercier, Mumm, Veuve Cliquot and Taittinger. Champagne itself is one of the great historic provinces of France, and tomorrow we will go down into the cellars and learn all about its most noble and popular wines.

Épernay

Today is all things champagne! All champagnes are produced within a few miles of each other outside Épernay and Reims, not far from the Abbey of Saint Pierre, where the monk Dom Pérignon is believed to have invented bubbly by accident! We drive through the vineyards and visit a well-known and boutique champagne house in the region with commentary from our local wine expert. Épernay’s most famous street is the Avenue de Champagne, lined by magnificent 19th century mansions built in Renaissance and classical style and home to all the great and prestigious champagne houses. The real spectacle is yet to be seen, descend into the cellars where you will see millions of bottles of champagne waiting to be popped open for some special occasion! Tonight we gather for our last evening together and enjoy a glass of bubbly and a delicious farewell dinner.

Paris

Before we head back to Paris we visit Reims, Champagne's main city. It was here in the magnificent cathedral that the kings of France were traditionally crowned. During the Great War most of the medieval city was lost and the city was extensively rebuilt in the 1920s in an Art Deco style. Thankfully, the wonderful Cathedral of Our Lady remains, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it continues to draw visitors from all over the world. A charming city with wide and attractive avenues, Reims is a fitting end to our travels. From here we travel back to the capital, sadly this is the end to our fascinating tour of three very different yet equally enthralling regions of this great and varied country.

Vienna

Vienna is a wonderful city, full of magnificent imperial buildings, palaces and concert halls. And it is of course where Adolf Hitler, then an aspiring artist, lived for some years as a young man. During this period the Austro-Hungarian empire was unravelling, and the notion of nationalism was spreading fast in what was then a multi-national society, and this had a great formative influence on the dictator-to-be. Arrive at your leisure today, and meet your guide in the early evening for a welcome drink and dinner and an introduction to the journey we take over the coming days.

Vienna

This morning we take a walking tour of Vienna with our expert local guide, who explains how all the key events came about and show us sites connected with Hitler and his triumphal entry into Vienna after the Anschluss of 1938, when cheering crowds welcomed the union of Germany with Austria. We also learn much more about Vienna during the war, a subject about which there is still much reticence among the Viennese people. We then visit the famous flak towers, constructed on the orders of Hitler in 1942 when Vienna became potentially endangered by the continuing battles. They consist of six huge, reinforced-concrete anti-aircraft towers which stand out starkly against the beautifully-restored architecture of the city itself. Our next visit is to the very special Third Man Museum, dedicated to the classic film of the same name shot in 1948, which has Vienna as its backdrop. This private museum boasts an astonishing collection of original artefacts from the film, and we will see footage showing the huge war- damage Vienna sustained during the war. We will also have an opportunity to discover much more about the role of Austria itself during the period of the Third Reich, material which is not to be found in the “official” museums.

Salzburg

This morning we leave Vienna and make our way to Berchtesgaden and the nearby Obersalzberg, a plateau where a huge Nazi complex was constructed, work beginning in 1935. Hitler’s existing home here, the “Berghof”, was enlarged to palatial dimensions, and GÅ‘ring’s residence was also remodelled. In addition there was extensive additional building-work undertaken to provide all the infrastructure necessary for the armies of guests and staff. Many photographs of Hitler, Eva Braun and various Nazi officials were taken on the terrace of the “Berghof”. Most of the buildings on the Obersalzberg are now gone, but parts of the underground bunkers still exist. We take the local bus up the mountain, then the lift, and enjoy spectacular views as we climb even higher to the famous “Eagle’s Nest”, Hitler’s mountain hideaway. We then make our way to Salzburg, a delightfully attractive town perhaps best known as being the birthplace of Mozart, references to whom are many as you wander around the pretty streets. You are free this evening to explore and dine at leisure in one of the many excellent restaurants.

Munich

Today our destination is Munich, the capital city of Bavaria. The birthplace of the Nazi party, this city was always its spiritual home, playing a central part in the rise to power of Hitler. An attractive and buzzing city, there is most certainly a dark side to Munich given its past, and the footprints of the Nazis are still visible today, from the Hofbräuhaus, where the party held its first mass meeting, to the KÅ‘nigsplatz, the site of mass party rallies. Our expert guide introduces us to all the major sites relevant to the Third Reich in the city and explain how the Nazis were able to gain such a foothold and gain such power. Munich was all but destroyed during the war, but has since been restored to its former glory, though the scars remain.

Munich

Today you are free to enjoy Munich as you wish. Whether you want to delve deeper into the city’s dark past, or alternatively enjoy the city as it is today, full of history, architecture and art. You might want to visit some of its outstanding museums, enjoy the culture, stroll through one of the parks, do some shopping or perhaps visit one of the famous traditional beer gardens for a “stein” of Bavarian beer.

Nuremberg

This morning we make our way to Nuremberg, a city indelibly linked with the Third Reich. The great Nazi rallies were held here in the 1930s, the legislation was made here which paved the way for the persecution of German Jews, and of course senior Nazis were tried here after the war. Many of the Nazi sites remain, and our expert guide will take us on a tour of the city and show us all the important sites. After visiting the castle, we will make our way to the infamous Rally Grounds, where giant rallies were held annually between 1927 and 1938, and the impressive and intimidating Zeppelin Field, which could hold many, many thousands of people. Most of the construction still survives, and it is possible to walk around on the actual structures. These rallies were almost like sacred rituals, with elaborate staging and stunning lighting, and it is possible to sense the enormous propaganda-value these gigantic assemblies would have engendered. We will then drive down the original “Great Road” through the Rally Grounds, some two kilometres long, before making our way to the infamous courthouse, scene of so many post-war Nazi trials. Here we visit Courtroom 600, where the International Military Tribunal tried senior Nazis charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity, of whom 12 were sentenced to death.

Berlin

We leave Nuremberg this morning in sombre mood as we travel north to Buchenwald, one of the major concentration camps of the Third Reich. Here prisoners were starved, maltreated, worked to death and subjected to numerous inhuman practices and cruel medical experiments. Most of the early inmates were political prisoners, but in the aftermath of “Kristallnacht”, a series of co-ordinated and vicious attacks against Jews and their property, the SS sent 10,000 Jews to Buchenwald where they were treated with extraordinary cruelty. The death toll is reckoned to be at least 50,000 – it is impossible to understand such horror and waste of human life. We have time to reflect on this terrible period of history and man’s inhumanity to man, as we drive on to Berlin.

Berlin

This morning our expert local guide introduces us to this iconic city, as we take a walking tour to familiarise ourselves with the main sites of interest and learn about Berlin’s devastation and the final death throes of the Third Reich, and of course the final hours of the Führer. The guns stopped firing on 2 May 1945, after one of the most intense battles in history, and Berlin was in ruins. A city full of spectacular landmarks and monuments, visible reminders of the war are many, and we will be shown the role Berlin played and understand the Cold War which followed. This afternoon you are free to explore the city further as you choose, and this evening we meet for our final dinner together and reflect on our journey.

Berlin

After our introduction to Berlin yesterday, this morning we visit some more fascinating sites. First the Bendlerblock, a complex of offices where von Stauffenberg and the other members of the plot to assassinate Hitler in 1944 were executed. Also located here is Memorial to the German Resistance and a museum explaining the national resistance movement, dedicated to opponents of the Nazi régime. Next we drive to the south of the city to Wannsee, scene of the chilling conference of January 1942, when the decision was made to implement the “Final Solution”, the extermination of the entire Jewish population of Europe, an estimated 11 million people in total. On the way we will call in at Grunewald Station and see Platform 17, from where the Jews of western Berlin were deported to the extermination camps. Here we find a very moving memorial showing the dates and numbers of people who were sent to terrible suffering and likely death. On this sad note we return to central Berlin where our tour ends. An emotive tour which has included many moving moments, but one which has taught us much.

Killarney

This morning we head out of Dublin towards County Kerry. Our first stop is at the Irish National Stud in County Kildare, home to some of Ireland’s finest thoroughbred horses and an important promoter of the “Sport of Kings” in Ireland. It is also home to the internationally renowned Japanese Gardens, acclaimed to be the best in Europe. Next we visit the delightful village of Adare, widely acknowledged as the prettiest and most picturesque in the whole of Ireland. Dating back to at least the 13th century and set in lush countryside and woodland, the village is particularly noted for the ornate thatched cottages bordering the main street, lovely stone buildings and medieval ruins. On arrival to Killarney, known as the gateway to the Ring of Kerry, your breath will be taken away by its wonderful setting in the midst of mountains, lakes and woodland. Experience the “craic” as we enjoy dinner followed by a fun-filled evening of Irish entertainment in a local pub.

Killarney

We spend today exploring the lovely Ring of Kerry with its spectacular scenery, fine beaches and ancient heritage. There are many interesting things to do and see on route. We make a short visit to Valentia Island, accessed by bridge from the mainland, where dramatic cliffs contrast with lush and colourful vegetation. Here we find the “Skellig Experience”, which tells of the Skellig monks and their lives in early Christian times and how they created a community which lasted six hundred years. Our next port of call is Portmagee, a small, picturesque fishing village full of brightly painted houses. Once a haven for smugglers and pirates, this is the perfect place to stop and enjoy lunch in one of the traditional local pubs. As our day continues we see Staigue Fort, an intriguing early ring fort standing in an amphitheatre of rugged hills, dating back to the early centuries AD. At the head of the River Sneem estuary we find the romantic village of Sneem, which is referred to as “The Knot in the Ring”. Brimming with traditional buildings, restaurants and craft shops, we will have some time to explore before we return to Killarney. Tonight the evening is free for you to enjoy as you choose.

Kinsale

Our first visit of the day is to Muckross House and its delightful gardens. Queen Victoria once paid a visit here, and many of the rooms in this magnificent mansion have now been restored to their original Victorian splendour. The gardens, resplendent in summer, also boast an arboretum with many trees from the southern hemisphere. Adjacent to the house are some traditional working farms which portray how the rural community of the 1930s lived and farmed. We then move on to the attractive town of Kenmare with its colourful shop fronts, nestled at the mouth of Kenmare Bay amid marvellous scenery. A thriving lace-making industry grew here, started by the Poor Clare nuns who came to the town after the famine, when employment was so badly needed. We will call in at the 200 year-old cottage of Molly Gallivan, a widow with seven small children and a meagre income, who brewed illicit whiskey and sold it in her illegal pub! Garnish Island is our next port of call, where we visit a garden of great beauty designed by Harold Peto. For those less interested in gardens, the views from the island are spectacular and we might catch a glimpse of the seals living on the rocks. We then arrive in the medieval town of Kinsale, one of the most picturesque and popular seaside resorts in the south-west, full of traditional bars, lovely buildings, narrow streets and fascinating shops. Tonight we will enjoy dinner together in one of the town’s famous eating places.

Killkenny

We leave Kinsale this morning and make our way to Cork City itself, which means in Gaelic a “marshy place”. The city, whose inhabitants have a characteristic and unique accent, has a vibrant cultural and intellectual life, and also boasts two rivals to the ubiquitous Guinness - Beamish and Murphys! We pay a visit to the English Market, one of the oldest of its kind which has been trading since 1788, surviving famine, war and economic decline over the years. We also visit Cork Gaol, dating from 1818, where we enjoy an entertaining tour of the well-preserved cells and hear anecdotes about some of the real-life prisoners. Leaving the city behind, we head down to the coast and town of Cobh, where we find Midleton Distillery, which houses the world’s biggest pot-still with a capacity of 32,000 gallons. Here we learn about the production of whiskey and, more importantly, get to taste what is considered by many to be the finest whiskey in Ireland! After this tasty detour we take the road to Kilkenny, said by many to be the most perfect medieval city in Ireland, perhaps most famous for its imposing castle. We spend the night here, where you are free to explore the town’s many attractions and dine at your leisure.

Dublin

Our route back to the capital takes us through the beautiful and dramatic Wicklow Mountains, through heather-clad hills, lush vegetation, rocky foothills and delightful glens. On our way we will stop in Avoca, perhaps most famous for being the location of the popular TV series “Ballykissangel”. We call in at Fitzgeralds pub, which featured so largely in the programme, and we may also have time to do a little shopping at the Avoca Woollen Mills. It’s then back to Dublin, where you can either settle into your hotel room or make your way in to the city - visit famous music pubs such as Oliver St John Gogarty’s, the Ha’penny Bridge Inn, Toners, Brannigans, The Bankers, the Palace Bar, O’Donoghues – the choice is endless!

Dublin

This morning, after a leisurely start, we go on a driving tour of the city where we get to see all the main sites of interest, including a tour of Kilmainham Gaol and a stop at the Guinness Storehouse which is, of course, a must on any visit to Dublin! Dublin has so much to offer, and whether your interests are culture and history or whether you just want to experience the life and fun of the city, there is something for everyone. Our driving tour gives you some great ideas of how you might want to spend your free afternoon. It might be a visit to see the world-famous “Book of Kells”, a richly-decorated copy of the four gospels, or you might want to delve into the literary heritage of the city, whose famous sons include James Joyce and George Bernard Shaw. You are free to do whatever takes your fancy this afternoon, but as our last night approaches we head out to Dublin’s oldest pub, the “Brazen Head”, for dinner and an evening of fabulous Irish music and storytelling. A terrific end to our wonderful tour of Ireland’s south-west corners.

Dublin

Our tour ends after breakfast, where we sadly go our separate ways. You might be heading straight home, or perhaps you will spend more time in Dublin exploring its many facets. Whatever the case may be, you take with you many fond memories of the real Ireland.

New Forest

We leave the hustle and bustle of London behind this morning and head south-west to the county of Hampshire and the New Forest which, despite its name, is an ancient area full of history, geology, wildlife and folklore. Originally established as a hunting ground for William the Conqueror almost a thousand years ago. Our first destination is Lymington, a pretty Georgian market town and popular sailing resort, from here we take the short ferry crossing over the Solent to the Isle of Wight. We disembark in Yarmouth, a busy little town overlooked by Yarmouth Castle, built by Henry VIII to protect England from invading forces. The scenery of the island is very diverse, from sandy beaches and wooded glades to rolling hills, and our scenic drive gives us wonderful views of the English Channel and the Atlantic Ocean as we make our way to Carisbrooke Castle, where King Charles I was famously imprisoned prior to his execution. Though eight hundred years old, over which time it successfully repelled both a siege by the French and indeed the Spanish Armada, the castle is beautifully preserved and the views from the battlements are superb. We enjoy a local seafood lunch at a nearby inn before continuing our journey. We explore Osborne House, Queen Victoria’s royal seaside palace, where she spent such happy times with Prince Albert and their nine children. Filled with original furnishings and priceless works of art, we glimpse into the private life of the royal family, and admire the delightful gardens. As Victoria said, “It is impossible to imagine a prettier spot”. Catching a late afternoon ferry, we arrive back on the mainland and make our way to our New Forest hotel.

Bath

Today we appreciate more of the charms of the New Forest, and we no doubt come across many of the ponies which roam free here in large numbers, their curiosity luring them into villages and even front gardens! Our first visit of the day is to Buckler’s Hard, which played such an important part in Britain’s ship building history. An 18th century maritime village, Nelson’s vessels were once built here, and it is fascinating to wander around this unique attraction and learn about its history. Leaving the delights of the New Forest behind, our destination is the magnificent medieval city of Salisbury, with its historic streets and alleyways, charming half-timbered buildings and, of course, its fine cathedral, perhaps the finest in England. Boasting the tallest spire in Britain, and housing the world’s best-preserved copy of the Magna Carta, Salisbury Cathedral dominates the city and the countryside around. As we drive over Salisbury Plain we pass Stonehenge, probably the most important prehistoric monument in the country. Completed around 3,500 years ago, the reasons for its existence are still unclear and range from human sacrifice to astronomy - perhaps it is the mystery surrounding it which makes it so fascinating. Our final destination today is the beautiful Georgian city of Bath, standing proudly on the River Avon. Its striking architecture, from the ancient Roman Baths to the magnificent Royal Terrace, make this city one of the most elegant in Europe. In the early 18th century Bath became England’s premier spa town, frequented by fashionable society who came here to “take the waters” and enjoy the theatres and concert rooms, and it remains today a hugely popular city, enticing visitors from all over the world. We explore the amazing Roman Baths, a magnificent temple and bathing complex built by the Romans around a hot spring, where the natural hot water still flows after all these years. We can walk on the very same ancient stones as the Romans did around the steaming central pool, and discover all the other beautifully preserved treasures among the extensive ruins. This evening you are free to explore more of this vibrant city at your leisure, and take your pick from one of the wonderful restaurants and pubs on your doorstep.

Bath

Today is full of true local experiences, as we really get off the tourist trail and get to know the delightful county of Somerset and the treats it has to offer – the water-flanked lanes of the Somerset levels, thatch-roofed villages, old churches, traditional crafts and welcoming pubs. This is a full day of local visits, and we do our very best to fit everything in! Our first port of call is the little-known Muchelney Abbey, once a wealthy Benedictine house which was largely demolished by Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries after his break with Rome. The 16th century Abbot’s House remains intact with its magnificent rooms, parts of the richly-decorated cloisters are still in evidence and the finds on display really bring the era to life. On the edges of ancient Muchelney village we find “John Leach’s Pottery”, John being the eldest grandson of the famous potter Bernard Leach. We call in briefly and hopefully glimpse the potters at work. Their kitchen pots are used daily all over the world, but this is still very much a family business, where local clay is used and the pots are hand-thrown. Another treat now as we visit a local cider farm, a true working farm where apples have been grown and cider has been pressed for at least 150 years. This is really back to nature and calls for sensible and sturdy shoes - and don’t be surprised if you attract the attentions of the free-roaming farm animals as we walk through the orchard! The farm produces a superb cider brandy as well as real local cider, which really warrants a taste. Next we call in at a small family-run smokery, which produces fine smoked eel, salmon, chicken, duck, lamb and trout, selling their produce to such famous establishments as “The Ivy” restaurant and “Fortnum and Mason”. As we make our way back to Bath we pass through the amazing Cheddar Gorge, with its dramatic cliffs rising to 450 feet and its spectacular stalactite caverns. We might even see some of the unusual wild horned sheep which range the area. This area is particularly famous for Cheddar cheese, which originally had to be made within a radius of thirty miles of the city of Wells to be able to carry the name. We see this famous cheese being made in the traditional way in the heart of the village and, of course, sample the delicious results. Lots of anecdotes are attached to this king of cheeses, one being that Queen Victoria was once presented with a cheese weighing 558 kilos, made from the milk of 700 cows! We arrive back in Bath after a day out on the real backroads, where we enjoy dinner together in a local restaurant as our tour draws to a close.

London

Today we leave the West Country behind and make our way back to London on the old coaching road, passing the mysterious prehistoric site of Silbury Hill on the way. We drive through Marlborough, an old market town famous for its public school (Kate Middleton was a former student), where coins were minted in Norman times and where coaches heading out of London stopped to feed and water their horses. Continuing on we make a stop in the attractive town of Hungerford, which is something of an antique-collector’s paradise. Take a look at the Antiques Arcade, located in an ancient building in the centre of the town and one of the first antiques centres to be set up in the country – one hundred dealers all under one roof selling something for every taste and pocket! We take a short walk along the pretty towpath of the Kennet and Avon canal, which links London with the Bristol Channel. This afternoon we will visit either the imposing Highclere Castle, home to the Carnarvon family since the 1600s and particularly known today as the location of TV’s “Downton Abbey” (please note: limited opening times apply - stop is not possible on all departures), or alternatively the magnificent Windsor Castle. Then we continue our journey back to the capital, where we say goodbye to our travelling companions, but we take away with us many fond memories of these delightful hidden corners of England.

Dieppe

We make our way from Lille to Dunkirk to learn about the Dunkirk Shield. Operation Dynamo, the evacuation from Dunkirk, is one of the most celebrated military events in British history. For over six months the two armies had faced each other across the Franco-German border, but after the German offensive in May 1940 the Allied armies were split, nearly trapping the British Expeditionary Force without any hope of escape. Instead the BEF was able to fight its way back to Dunkirk, where troops were rescued by a fleet of small ships. We visit the interesting Dunkirk Dynamo Museum, housed in what was the headquarters of the French army in 1939, where we will learn more about The Battle of Dunkirk and the lead-up to Operation Dynamo. En route we see remnants of the Maginot Line in Cassel, the site of the Le Paradis Massacre, where the Norfolks were executed by the SS after surrendering, and the barn in Esquelbecq where the Warwicks met a similar fate.

Bayeux

Today we visit sites connected with the Dieppe landings of 1942 which involved British, Canadian and American units. The objective of Operation Jubilee was to capture and hold an established port to gauge the German response. Highlights today include visiting the landing sites of No. 3 and No. 4 Commando and Blue and Green Beach, where the Canadian Regiments suffered great losses. We continue to Bayeux and our overnight accommodation.

Bayeux

We spend time today covering the British and Canadian landing and dropping zones. Gold, Juno and Sword Beaches, each with their own reminders of epic events, the Mulberry Harbour in Arromanches, Pegasus Bridge, Café Gondrée (the first house to be liberated), Merville Battery overlooking Sword Beach and many other places of interest, including Divisional and Unit Memorials where we will pay our respects, make for a full programme.

Normandy Beaches

Our final day will be spent covering the American involvement, and we visit Utah Beach and "bloody" Omaha Beach, with its sheer cliffs at the Point du Hoc, and Colleville Cemetery, containing the remains of nearly 10,000 servicemen. A stop at Sainte Mère Eglise, where paratrooper John Steele got caught on the church steeple and which is home to the Iron Mike Memorial to the US Airborne Forces, brings us to the end of our visit. We leave Normandy behind and return to Lille.

Sidmouth

Departing London, we drive south-west through Hampshire and to Thomas Hardy’s much loved ancient kingdom of Wessex. We stop in Winchester, where a replica of King Arthur’s Round Table is on display in the only remaining part of the castle, The Great Hall. We take a gentle stroll to the city’s remarkable 7th century cathedral renowned for its architecture and hidden treasures, including 12th-century wall paintings, medieval carvings, the Winchester Bible and Jane Austen's tomb. Enjoy a coffee before returning to the coach for our delightful journey into the lovely, quaint county of Dorset. This is real Back-Roads country, where time has stood still amidst the little villages and towns as we meander through Thomas Hardy country. From here we travel along the ‘Jurassic Coast’, awarded World Heritage Site status and famous for its geology and fossil finds. We explore Jane Austen’s Lyme Regis where she based parts of her novel Persuasion and which was also the setting for John Fowles’ The French Lieutenant's Woman. Wander along the 18th century promenade, its famous Cobb and ancient harbour that continues to inspire writers and artists. We continue to our seaside accommodation where we will enjoy dinner.

Sidmouth

This morning we explore the region known as the ‘English Riviera’ – covering 22 miles of coastline, here you can enjoy unique geology and spectacular views. This is Agatha Christie country and the setting for many of her famous crimes. We travel through the Victorian seaside towns and fishing villages along the coast ensuring we stop at one for a traditional Devonshire clotted cream tea! In the afternoon we travel through Dartmoor National Park. Get your cameras ready as we meander through beautiful country lanes, over ancient stone bridges and through dramatic rolling countryside where ponies roam wild. We return to our seaside accommodation for dinner.

Somerset

As we head back towards London there are still a huge number of interesting sights in store. Our first highlight of the day is the mystical town of Glastonbury and its Abbey, the reputed site of Arthur and Guinevere’s burial and the “new age” capital of England with its esoteric collection of shops. We then pop in to the attractive market city of Wells, known for its ornate cathedral and Vicar’s Close (the oldest continuously inhabited medieval street in Europe). From here we make our way back to London.

Portree

Today takes you along the west coast around Appin and Glencoe, through Fort William and up to the Commando Memorial with great views over Ben Nevis, Britain's highest mountain. You now take the "Road to the Isles" with a stop at Eilean Donan Castle. Crossing over the sea to Skye, we arrive at the harbour town of Portree by early evening.

Skye

Skye. There are many possibilities depending on the weather and we take passengers preferences into account. Opportunities to visit the stunning Quiraing mountain pass, Kilt Rock, with it's waterfall cascading over the cliffs, or go over to Dunvegan Castle, ancient ancestral seat of the Clan McLeod. Talisker Distillery is also here, as are the famous Cuillin Hills. We return in the early evening for you to enjoy your second free night in Portree.

Loch Ness

After breakfast we travel back to the mainland for stunning views over Loch Duich and the 5 Sisters of Kintail. We are at Loch Ness for lunch where a boat trip (Summer only) could get you closer to “Nessie”! A new guide takes over here and we then continue north up the Great Glen travelling the whole 23 miles of the famous Loch before arriving in Inverness .

Kirkwall

An early start, crossing over the Black Isle, and past Andrew Carnegie's Skibo Castle, we drive through the NE Highland coastline and some of Scotland's most dramatic scenery. Onwards through Scotland's most northerly mainland village, John o' Groats, and then to Gills Bay where you board the ferry for the Orkney Archipelago and a short drive to the Viking stronghold of Kirkwall, Capital of Orkney, and where you shall stay for 2 nights.

Skara Brae

Your chance to explore this fantastic, ancient island. You will visit the 5000 year old village of Skara Brae, the mystical prehistoric stone circle at Brodgar and the Druidic standing stones of Stenness. We stop in Stromness and Maeshowe, with it's Norse runic inscriptions. Then its back to Kirkwall after what is sure to be a memorable day.

Ullapool

We sail the Viking waters back to the mainland. From here you travel across the very top of Scotland following the rocky cliffs of our northern coastline on way to the 15th C ruins of Ardvreck Castle. From here we travel to Ullapool, a beautiful fishing village, for one night.

Culloden Moor

Today we take in the drama of the River Dorma as it plunges 60m down into Corrieshalloch Gorge and visit Culloden Moor, the site of The Battle of Culloden in 1746. We stop for lunch in the ancient Caledonian Pine Forest before travelling through big tree country of Perthshire, through the Kingdom of Fife, and back to Edinburgh around 19.00.

Callander

Day 1 Depart Edinburgh at 09.00 and travel west passing Linlithgow Palace and Stirling with its imposing castle and views of the Wallace Monument. You pass Doune Castle, set of Monty Python's "Holy Grail" before stopping in Callander for refreshments. Crossing into the Highlands you head north towards the glorious scenery surrounding Loch Luibnaig then through Breadalbane (meaning the ‘high country of Scotland’) and up to the wild desolation of Rannoch Moor. You continue through the spectacular mountain pass of Glencoe, scene of the great massacre of the Clan Macdonald in 1692. Leaving Fort William after lunch you drive past Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis, and into the Great Glen. Travelling west on the "Road to the Isles" you head through the splendour of the Five Sisters of Kintail, the mountains guarding the pass on the way to the Isle of Skye. You stop to visit the famous Eilean Donan Castle, one of Scotland’s most photographed castles, set at the junction of 3 lochs and completely surrounded by water. Crossing over the bridge to Skye, you follow the dramatic coastline north towards the island’s capital, Portree. You are then dropped off at your accommodation in the early evening where you are free to go out and explore the town.

Portree

Day 2 is a very flexible day on Skye. There are many possibilities depending on the weather and your driver/guide's knowledge will come to the fore in developing the best day out for you on that particular day. North of Portree is the Trotternish ridge with its spectacular cliffs and rock formations, such as the famous landmark – the Old Man of Storr, the impressive sea cliff, Kilt Rock and the stunning mountain pass of the Quiraing. Amazing natural scenery, which is best enjoyed away from the bus by taking a walk through this unique landscape. Further west the scenery changes again with the emerald green valley of Glendale, the dramatic sea-cliffs of Neist Point (the most westerly point on the island, where you might get lucky and spot some whales or sharks!), and the 13th-century home of the Clan Macleod, Dunvegan Castle. You return to Portree in the evening.

Loch Ness

Day 3 You will be collected from your accommodation and travel south through the Cuillin Hills and back over to the mainland for stunning views over Loch Duich and the 5 Sisters of Kintail. Onto Loch Ness for lunch and the possibility of spotting "Nessie". There is a boat trip (Summer only) available here that will get you that bit closer! Heading south now through the Grampian mountains along Loch Laggan, famous now as "Monarch of the Glen Country" before passing Dalwhinnie, home to Scotland's highest whisky Distillery, and onwards past Blair Castle stopping for refreshments before heading back to Edinburgh past Perth and over the Forth Road Bridge. Arriving at 19.00 approx.

Dunkeld

Departing from Edinburgh at 09.00 your three-day Scotch Whisky adventure starts with the journey north into the Highlands. The first stop will be the historic village of Dunkeld for a short walk through the forest to some atmospheric waterfalls. After lunch in Pitlochry you will make your first distillery visit at Dalwhinnie – the highest distillery in the country and the closest to the source of the River Spey. From here you follow the river north through the Cairngorm National Park to the small town of Grantown on Spey – your base for the next two nights.

Elgin

A whole day exploring Scotland’s most famous whisky region. After a scenic drive toward the coast your first stop of the day will be at the family owned Benromach Distillery for a personalised tour. From here it is a short distance to Elgin – home to Gordon and Macphail – one of the world’s leading specialist whisky bottlers and suppliers. Their shop has one of the widest selection of malts you will find anywhere. From here you will travel back up the Spey to Craigellachie for a visit to the Speyside Cooperage where you will see another aspect of the whisky making process. After lunch here or in nearby Aberlour you will visit Cardhu Distillery. Cardhu is the most important whisky in Johnnie Walker Black Label. From here is back to Grantown on Spey.

Glenlivet

Takes you through the beautiful Cairngorm Mountains on route back to Edinburgh. In the morning you will explore Glenlivet – not just a distillery but also a beautiful glen with great walks and wonderful wildlife. Later you will pass by the famous Balmoral Castle and stop in the village of Braemar in the heart of the National Park. From here the route south passes over Scotland’s highest mountain pass then through the Perthshire before arriving back in Edinburgh around 18.30

Kilmartin

Day 1 Leaving Edinburgh at 08.30 you will head west through Scotland’s largest city, Glasgow along Loch Lomond then west through the mountains to the beautiful little village of Inveraray on the banks of Loch Fyne. Here you can perhaps sample some of the local seafood for lunch or just explore the historic town itself. After lunch you will then travel through Argyll and into the ancient Kingdom of Dalriada. There are more than 350 prehistoric monuments within a six-mile radius of the village of Kilmartin. We will stop here to see the mysterious stone circles and standing stones and visit the community museum. From here it is a short drive to Kennacraig where we catch the early evening ferry to Islay. The sail is just over 2 hours and you should look out for wildlife such as dolphins, whales and seabirds. On arrival on Islay is is a short drive to Bowmore for your 3 night stay.

Islay

Day 2 A full day exploring Islay. The itinerary today is quite flexible with a mixture of beautiful scenery, white sand beaches, short walks and of course the famous Islay whiskies - renowned for their strong peaty flavours and nurtured by the salty sea air. In the morning we will take the short drive to the west of the island via Saligo Bay for a visit to Kilchoman Distillery (the newest and smallest on the island) with the option of a coastal walk to Machair Bay for any non-whisky lovers. In the afternoon you will stop at the privately owned Bruichladdich Distillery for a tour and tasting and visit the tiny harbour village of Portnahaven (look out for seals) before taking the back roads along the west coast with its lovely sandy bays, on the way back to Bowmore.

Ardbeg

Day 3 Another day in paradise! Today you will explore the southern side of the island, home to the smokiest and peatiest of all whiskies – Laphroaig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg. We will visit Ardbeg for a tour, tasting and lunch. The restaurant here is a beautiful place to relax and enjoy local produce as well as some unique whisky. We then follow that up with a visit to Laphroaig.. While in the area we may visit the ruins of Kildalton church with its famous 8th Century Celtic cross. In the late afternoon there are several possibilities depending on the weather and time available including free time in Bowmore village, a visit to Brigend and Islay House Square or a walk along the River Sorn. If you are back in Bowmore early you could visit the famous Round Church, Bowmore Distillery itself (June – Aug) or just relax with a quiet drink looking out over the water.

Oban

Day 4 This morning you take the ferry back to the mainland then travel up the coast to Oban – a busy harbour town and the main ferry port for the islands. Here we will drop off anyone who is continuing on the Mull, Iona and Isle of Skye extension. The others will have some free time to explore the town, have a late lunch or even pop into Oban Distillery before departing for the return trip to Glasgow and Edinburgh. Return time approx. 20.00

Spey Valley

Day 1 Depart Edinburgh and travel north into the Highlands. First stop will be the historic village of Dunkeld where you will take a short walk through the forest to some waterfalls. Continuing north the route passes through the Grampian Mountains to the Spey Valley where you will stop for lunch. In the afternoon you will visit the world famous Loch Ness then make a short stop in Inverness itself. There will be time for a visit to the impressive waterfalls at Corrieshalloch Gorge before you arrive in the West Coast fishing port of Ullapool for your overnight stay.

Lewis

Day 2 Catch the morning ferry from Ullapool for the 2 hour sail along Loch Broom, past the Summer Isles then out across the Minch to Stornoway – the main town on Lewis and capital of the Outer Hebrides. Look out for dolphins, whales and seabirds during the crossing. In the afternoon explore the North West coast from Arnol with its historic old “blackhouse”, through traditional crofting townships to Port of Ness and the very north tip of the island – the Butt of Lewis. From the lighthouse here there is nothing between you and the Americas! Overnight in Stornoway.

Carloway

Day 3 Today will be spent exploring some of the prehistoric remains on the island as well as its finest beaches. The fascinating circular stone fort, or Broch, at Carloway will be your first stop followed by more traditional crofting communities such as Gearrannan and Shawbost. Then it’s on to Callanish with its mysterious ancient stone circle. In the afternoon you will head for the remote district of Uig with its fine, sandy beaches at Bhaltos, dramatic sea cliffs and rugged hills. This is the wilderness of the Western Isles at its finest. Overnight again in Stornoway.

Harris

Day 4 Travelling south today from the wild moorlands of Lewis to the more mountainous Harris – almost but not quite an island on its own. Famous for the locally produced cloth, Harris Tweed, it is also home to the highest mountains in the Outer Hebrides and the stunning white sands of Luskentyre. After a morning of exploring South Harris you will stop for lunch in the small port of Tarbet from where you will catch the late afternoon ferry to Skye. Once on Skye it is less than hour to Portree, the island’s main town, and your overnight stay.

Portree

Day 5 Departing from Portree the return journey to Edinburgh has many highlights – the Cuillin Mountains, a visit to Eilean Donan Castle, Fort William and the dramatic scenery and dark history of Glencoe. Travelling back south through the Central Highland the last stop of the day will be in Killin beside the Falls of Dochart before returning to Edinburgh.

Argyll

Day 1 takes you north passed Stirling castle, and then west to Scotland's first National Park around Loch Lomond,and the bonny banks". You will travel through the impressive mountains of the West Highlands through the magnificent white-washed 18th Century town of Inveraray, home to the Campbell Clan and the Duke of Argyll. The afternoon will be spent in the heart of Argyll exploring the area close to the ancient Kingdom of Dalriada before arriving in bustling town of Oban, the gateway to the islands, for your 2 night stay.

Mull & Iona

Day 2 is an early start crossing on the ferry to Mull and enjoying an island adventure exploring her dramatic coastlines and wild beauty, before taking the small ferry to the peace and tranquility of Iona - birthplace of Celtic Christianity and ancient burial ground of Scottish Kings. Here you can visit the historic abbey with its intricate carved crosses in the churchyard or explore the rocky headlands and sandy coves of this island gem. There is also an opportunity to take a small boat out to the island of Staffa (except Saturday departures in September) and view the dramatic basalt columns immortalised by Mendelssohn in his Hebridean Overture "Fingal's Cave". You then return on the ferry to Oban for your second night.

Isle of Skye

Day 3 takes you north along the west coast around Appin, passing the impregnable Castle Stalker, and Glencoe, scene of the infamous massacre of the Clan Macdonald in 1692. You then pass through Fort William and up to the Commando Memorial at Spean Bridge with great views over Ben Nevis, Britain's highest montain. Your tour now takes the "Road to the Isles" through the splendour of the Five Sisters of Kintail, the mountains guarding the pass on the way to the Isle of Skye. You stop to visit the famous stronghold Eilean Donan Castle, used in the film "Highlander", set at the junction of 3 lochs as protection against Viking raiders. Crossing over the sea to Skye, you travel up to the picturesque harbour town of Portree. You are then dropped off at your accommodation in the early evening, where you are free to go out and explore the town.

Portree

Day 4is a very flexible day on Skye. There are many possibilities depending on the weather and we take passengers preferences into account. For example : Travel north to the stunning Quiraing mountain pass and enjoy a spectacular walk through some of Skye's extraordinary geological scenery, visit Kilt Rock, composed of basalt columns (reminiscent of the pleats in a kilt) with it's waterfall cascading over the cliffs and down into the sea below. After lunch you can go over to Neist Point for a walk out to the lighthouse that is the furthest point west on Skye. Or go over to Dunvegan Castle, ancient ancestral seat of the Clan McLeod. Talisker Distillery is also here, as are the famous Cuillin Hills. We return you to your accommodation in Portree in the early evening for you to enjoy your second free night in Portree.

Loch Ness

1915: the Second Battle of Ypres, including Essex Farm (John McCrae's dressing station,) and Vancouver Corner - the area of the Gas attack. We visit the German Cemetery at Langemarck and the Sanctuary Wood Museum. Time in Ypres to visit the Flanders Fields Museum before considering the infamous 'Passchendaele' and visiting the CWGC Cemetery and Memorial at Tyne Cot. Tonight we attend the Menin Gate Ceremony at 8.00pm.(

Arras

Today the Messines Ridge, which preceded the third battle at Ypres, then Neuve Chapelle and Loos and to Vimy Ridge, where we see the great Canadian Memorial, the trench lines and cratered ground. After lunch the battle areas of 1st July 1916; Serre and Redan Ridge; the Sunken Road; Newfoundland Park and the Lochnagar Crater. Dinner and overnight in Arras.

Auchonvillers

Maricourt and Montauban; the later attacks on High Wood, Delville Wood, Pozieres and the Ancre Heights. We visit the Anglo-French Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, high on the ridge at Thiepval. Lunch in Auchonvillers then back for the Calais Dover ferry. ETA London 20:30.

Firstly, Point du Hoc and then Omaha Beach to the American Military Cemetery to get an overview of the appalling challenge of landing on Bloody Omaha. We also visit La Chaos, the Disembarkation Museum and Mulberry Harbour in Arromanches.

Bayeux

We visit the Battle of Normandy Museum in Bayeux which offers the visitor a better understanding of the decisive actions taken in the liberation of Western Europe. Then to Verrieres Ridge, before travelling on to the Juno Beach Center, dedicated to all Canadian's involvement during World War II. We also visit the Canadian Military Cemetery at Beny-sur-Mer.

Arras

We travel through the Normandy countryside to Dieppe to visit the Dieppe Canadian Cemetery, Green Beach at Pourville, the main landing beaches of Red and White on the Dieppe seafront and the Blue Beach in Puys. We travel to Arras for 2 nights.

Arras

After breakfast, we visit the Musee de Arbris and then tour the Somme Battlefield and visit the Memorial to the Missing at Thiepval. One of the only surviving intact First World War battlefields is at Beaumont Hamel, now maintained by Canada, and dedicated to the Newfoundland Regiment who lost so many men on the first day of the Somme.

Vimy Ridge

April 9th: On Hill 145, April 1917, Canadian troops combined and stormed Vimy Ridge after other allied forces had failed to do so. You will tour the tunnels, trenches and memorial and be part of the 95th Anniversary Ceremony. Later we travel to Ypres for a 2 night stay.

Ypres

This morning we visit “In Flanders Fields” museum and also Essex Farm, where John McCrae wrote “In Flanders Fields” and other parts of the Canadian Front Line. After dinner, attend the Menin Gate Last Post Ceremony at 8PM, led by the Ypres Fire Department.

Nijmegen

After breakfast we depart to Nijmegen for the opportunity to visit the Canadian Military Cemetery at Groesbeek as well as the Hartenstein Hotel, then the command centre for Operation Garden, now the Museum to the Airborne. We spend 2 nights in Nijmegen.

Arnhem

First stop today will be Arnhem, known as the “Bridge too Far” during Operation Market Garden. This is also the area that the Canadian 2nd division liberated in 1944/45 and we visit Apeldoorn and the Holten Canadian Military Cemetery Tonight your “farewell dinner” at a local restaurant.

This morning after breakfast you will transfer to Amsterdam airport for your flight home, unless extending your stay.

After clearing customs we will visit the Runnymede Memorial, overlooking the River Thames, dedicated to the Commonwealth Air Forces. A short panoramic tour of London follows before checking into our London area hotel for 2 nights. Welcome dinner at the hotel.

London

Today a visit to the Cabinet War Rooms and the new Churchill Exhibition will give you an intimate look at how the government managed during the Blitz. We will also visit the National Army Museum where you'll find uniforms worn by British soldiers in every corner of the world, and the Imperial War Museum. Tonight a Pub Dinner.

Brookwood

After breakfast, we tour to Brookwood to pay our respects to the lads who are laid to rest in the Canadian Military Cemetery, many of whom succumbed to wounds on the beaches of Dieppe as well as during training in England. You will also visit Aldershot Military Museum in observation of the Canadian 1st Division who arrived in Aldershot in December 1939. Then to the great naval port of Portsmouth where we visit the D-Day Museum.

Normandy

Today, you make the same sailing that took place in 1944 and arrive on the shores of Normandy. You will visit Cafe Gondre, the first house liberated just after midnight on 6th June 1944 and Pegasus Bridge where Major John Howard and the 6th Airborne successfully took the bridge across Caen Canal . Then on to Bayeux for a 2 night stay.

Bayeux

Firstly a visit to Bloody Omaha and the American Military Cemetery. Travelling along Gold Beach we reach the Juno Beach Center, dedicated to the 3rd Division landings as well as Canada's full involvement during World War II. Dieppe

This morning we take the route of the Canadians during the Battle of Normandy and enter Dieppe from the Liberators direction. We pay our respects at the Dieppe Canadian Cemetery which was initially cared for by the citizens of Dieppe from 1942, before visiting Green Beach at Pourville. We check into our hotel in Rouen for 2 nights and after dinner take part in a walk of honour on Red & White Beaches.

Puys

August 19th: An early start to spend time in Puys and Blue Beach, where so many men of the Royal Regiment of Canada lost their lives on this day 70 years ago. Then on to the beaches of Dieppe for the civil ceremonies and honours bestowed on Canada by the citizens of Dieppe.

Vimy Ridge

Travel through Amiens and onto the Somme, to visit Thiepval, Beaumont Hamel and Courcellette to walk the bloodiest of battlefields for Canadians and Royal Newfoundland Regiment. Also visit Vimy Ridge and tour the tunnels. On to Arras for 2 nights.

Arras

Today, an opportunity to visit La Coupole and the Nazi bunker V2 site. We will then tour on to Ypres Salient and visit sites of Passchendaele, Hill 62, Essex Farm and Vancouver Corner, where the first gas attack took place against Canadian Forces.

We visit is the Battle of Normandy Museum in Bayeux which offers the visitor a better understanding of the decisive actions taken in the liberation of Western Europe. Then to Verrieres Ridge before travelling on to the Juno Beach Center, dedicated to all Canadian's involvement during World War II. We also visit the Canadian Military Cemetery at Beny-sur-Mer.

Arromanches

Firstly, Point du Hoc and then Omaha Beach to the American Military Cemetery to get an overview of the appalling challenge of landing on Bloody Omaha. We also visit La Chaos, the Disembarkation Museum and Mulberry Harbour in Arromanches.

Dieppe

We travel through the Normandy countryside to Dieppe to visit the Dieppe Canadian Cemetery, Green Beach at Pourville, the main landing beaches of Red and White on the Dieppe seafront and the Blue Beach in Puys. We travel to Arras to your hotel for 2 nights.

Arras

After breakfast, we visit the Musee de Arbris and then tour the Somme Battlefield and visit the Memorial to the Missing at Thiepval. One of the only surviving intact First World War battlefields is at Beaumont Hamel, now maintained by Canada, and dedicated to the Newfoundland Regiment who lost so many men on the first day of the Somme.

Vimy Ridge

On Hill 145, April 1917, Canadian troops combined and stormed Vimy Ridge after other allied forces had failed to do so. You will tour the tunnels, trenches and memorial. We also visit John McCrae's Essex Farm, the place where he wrote “In Flanders Fields” and other parts of the Canadian Front Line. After dinner, the Menin Gate Last Post Ceremony at 8PM, led by the Ypres Fire Department. We spend 2 nights in Ypres.

Ypres

Remembrance Day. This morning we join in the Remembrance Parade for 11am at the Menin Gate after which you will also visit “In Flanders Fields” museum as well as visit the Crest Farm and Armistice Ceremony at Passchendaele.

Nijmegen

After breakfast we depart to Nijmegen for the opportunity to visit the Canadian Military Cemetery at Groesbeek as well as the Hartenstein Hotel, then the command centre for Operation Garden, now the Museum to the Airborne. We spend 2 nights in Nijmegen.

Arnhem

First stop today will be Arnhem, known as the “Bridge too Far” during Operation Market Garden. This is also the area that the Canadian 2nd division liberated in 1944/45 and we visit Apeldoorn and the Holten Canadian Military Cemetery Tonight your “farewell dinner” at a local restaurant.

Venice

After Breakfast, transfer by motorised waterbuses (vaporetti) to St. Mark Square where we will begin our tour of Venice visiting St. Mark Square and the Doge's Palace (external), symbol of the glory and the authority of Venice. This represents the residence of the Dukes, of the Government and the Court of Justice. At the end of the tour, the group will stop in one of the famous Murano glasses factory.

Montepulciano

Today we are off to the famous Region of Chianti in Tuscany, made up of gentle slopes and populated by ancient castles and secular parishes as in Pievi. In this area there is the biggest production of wine, the most famous being the Chianti Classico, made with the white and black grapes. Next, on to Montepulciano - a famous city situated in the north of Val d'Orcia, known for its wine, the Brunello (famous red worldwide wine). For wine and jazz lovers, in July there is the Jazz and wine festival. Tasting of local wine, free time at disposal. Final destination today is Rome for a 2 night stay.

Rome

Rome - Start the day with a walking tour of this famous city and its artistic beauties including Piazza di Spagna, Fontana di Trevi, Pantheon, Piazza Navona and San Pietro Basilica. Enjoy an afternoon at leisure.

Naples

After leaving Rome, the coach will take the “Sun Route” motorway, driving through the regions of Lazio and Campania, with a view of the Abbey of Montecassino. Today our drive takes us through the countryside of Alsace, crossing into Switzerland at Basle before passing Zurich on our way to Davos where we stay for 2 nights at the very nice Central Sporthotel.

Tirano

We depart after breakfast for the journey on the Bernina Express where some of the most amazing scenery in Switzerland and Italy may be seen. The trip from Pontresini to Tirano passes through breathtaking scenery. In Tirano we have time for a typical Italian lunch (not included) before returning via the famous resort of St Moritz. Time for a coffee break overlooking the Lake of St Moritz before returning to Davos via the Fluela Pass.

Chur

Leaving Davos after breakfast we set off to Chur where we join another highlight, the Glacier Express. This is the slowest express train in the world taking you through some of the most stunning scenery imaginable past snow capped mountains, glaciers, crystal clear streams, pretty little hamlets and hundreds of tunnels are encountered on the way. On board there is a regular minibar service serving drinks and snacks. On leaving the train we travel to Graschen for our 2 night stay at the cosy Hotel Walliserhof.

Zermatt

A full day excursion to Zermatt. A day of super highlights as we head off from the local station to take our first train ride through the Matter Valley and then 12 minutes up to the renowned mountain village of Zermatt. Yorkshire

At leisure in Yorkshire with three included excursions. EXCURSION: Harewood House: A stylish Gold holiday is perfectly complimented with a wonderful excursion to Harewood House. Inside you will discover a magnificent collection of paintings, furniture and porcelain as fine as any in the land. You can also explore over 100 acres of beautifully maintained gardens where you can discover the Bird Garden and All Saints Church. EXCURSION: Halifax and Saltaire World Heritage: We begin our day by travelling to the industrial Pennine Town of Halifax. Formerly the heart of England's woollen industry, this charming market town is now home to some of the region's best-preserved Georgian and Victorian landmarks, none more so than Piece Hall. This Grade 1 listed masterpiece, has been a focal point in Halifax for over 230 years. Heading home from Halifax we visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Saltaire Village named after Sir Titus Salt who built a textile mill and this village on the River Aire. Walking around Saltaire you will become aware of its exceptionally complete and well preserved industrial heritage dating back to the second half of the 19th century. The urban plan survives intact today, giving a vivid impression of Salt’s vision for industrial management. EXCURSION: York: An elegant trip to Yorkshire wouldn’t be complete without visiting the spiritual capital of the North. Medieval York is a beautiful compact riverside city famous for its Roman, Viking, and Medieval heritage dating back 2000 years. Within the ancient walls and twisting atmospheric streets you will find an array of sights to discover; like iconic York Minster, JORVIK and a host of museums, shops, charming tea rooms and traditional pubs.

Lake District

At leisure with two included excursions. Northern Lakeland, Keswick, Grasmere & Derwentwater with optional* boat cruise: First stop today is Grasmere, a charming village in the heart of the Lake District National Park, with the opportunity to visit Dove Cottage, the home of William Wordsworth.We continue to Derwentwater, a peaceful and picturesque area where there will be an opportunity for an optional* boat cruise, the ideal way to fully appreciate the beauty of the area.We shall also be visiting the Lakeland town of Keswick. EXCURSION: Southern Lakeland, Hawkshead, Coniston & Ambleside: Today our excursion is to the southern lakes, with a stop in Hawkshead, passing Hill Top, the home of Beatrix Potter.We also visit Lake Coniston, the scene of numerous water speed record attempts, and the inspiration for ‘Swallows and Amazons’.We return to our hotel via Ambleside.

A morning departure from London, stopping for an included vineyard tour and wine tasting, Carr Taylor Vineyard. We continue to Hastings Old Town en-route to our resort hotel.

Eastbourne

At leisure in Eastbourne with two included excursions. Eastbourne is a unique seaside resort with an amazing range of activities for you to enjoy in a fantastic setting. EXCURSION: East Sussex, Rye and Battle: Firstly we travel to Battle, the site of the Battle of Hastings, where William, Duke of Normandy, defeated King Harold II to become William I in 1066. Why not visit the Abbey or maybe the award winning Buckley's Yesterday's World attraction (admissions not included). We continue onto the picturesque Cinque Port town of Rye before returning to Eastbourne. EXCURSION: Beachy Head & Brighton: Today we journey to Beachy Head, the most famous area of the Eastbourne Downs. You have ample free time here to explore before we continue in the afternoon to Brighton, home to the Royal Pavilion which was built as a home for the Prince Regent during the early 19th century. Again enjoy emple free time here to explore before we return you to the hotel.

Beamish

At leisure with three included excursions. EXCURSION: Beamish Museum: Visit the award winning Beamish Museum and experience the past through its people. Enjoy all of the unique attractions at Beamish in The Town, Colliery Village and Home Farm, all set in 1913. Step further back in time to the Georgian north to explore Pockerley Manor and take a ride on the 1825 Railway. EXCURSION: Durham & Barnard Castle: Firstly we visit Durham, on the River Wear and famous for its cathedral, we enjoy some sightseeing and stop for lunch. After lunch we take the scenic route via Weardale and Teesdale to Barnard Castle, a lively and bustling market town. Regular markets, speciality shops, restaurants, bars and tea rooms make it a perfect place to spend quality time browsing for gift ideas and for all manner of refreshments light and gourmet. Durham has been recognized nationally as one of the 50 most historically and architecturally important towns in Britain. The remains of the Castle, built in 1150 and once a Norman stronghold, has Royal associations and features a 14th Century round tower. The centre boasts all the qualities of a market town with a cobbled market place. Here there are sightseeing opportunities before we return to the hotel. EXCURSION: North York Moors National Park: Travel into the North York Moors National Park with our first stop in the ancient market town of Helmsley. Afterwards we move onto Pickering, regarded as the centre of the National Park. A choice of mode of transport for you, either by coach or by the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from Pickering to Grosmont, with trains sometimes hauled by steam engines. Should you wish to travel by train, the fare is included in the price.We then travel on to the ancient seaport of Whitby for further sightseeing, before returning back to the hotel.

Bournemouth

At leisure in Bournemouth with three included excursions. With seven miles of golden sands and sparkling sea, the vibrant town of Bournemouth has it all: shops, restaurants, attractions and endless countryside with beautiful award winning gardens and beaches. EXCURSION: The Blue Pool, Swanage with optional* train ride to Corfe Castle: Today we visit The Blue Pool, Swanage and Corfe Castle. We travel to the Blue Pool, set in 25 acres of heath woodland and gorse interlaced with sandy paths. The Blue Pool constantly varies in colour. Very fine clay in suspension in the water diffracting light in different ways producing a spectrum of colour (admission included).We then continue onto Swanage where you have free time or you will have the opportunity to take an optional ride on the preserved Swanage Railway to Corfe Castle (summer only). EXCURSION: Highcliffe Castle & Christchurch: We first visit Highcliffe Castle (Admission into the castle/visitor centre is not included). Highcliffe Castle is a grade 1 listed building built between 1831 and 1835. Access the coastal path from the castle grounds or take the zig zag path down to the beach. This afternoon we visit the historic town of Christchurch. EXCURSION: New Forest: Today we will go to the picturesque New Forest visiting towns and villages typical of the area such as Burley, one of the prettiest New Forest villages and home to the New Forest Cider Farm.We continue from here to Lyndhurst in time for lunch. The village of Lyndhurst, “Capital” of the New Forest was established as a royal hunting ground by William the Conqueror and offers among other things a museum in the New Forest visitor centre, shops, and the grave of the original Alice in Wonderland (Alice Liddell, later Hargreaves) in the churchyard. This afternoon we continue our New Forest tour and visit Brockenhurst, the place where the North and South Weirs streams join. Our last visit of the day is Beaulieu, home to the National Motor Museum, you have a short while at leisure to explore the village before returning to the hotel.
