Oxford
We begin our day travelling across the Chiltern Hills to Oxford, the 'City of Dreaming Spires,' whose hushed courtyards have inspired generations of scholars including Bill Clinton and writers, Lewis Carroll who wrote 'Alice in Wonderland', C.S. Lewis who wrote 'Chronicles of Narnia' and the immortal J.R.R. Tolkein, author of 'Lord of the Rings'. On the walking tour you'll visit Christ Church college, where Harry Potter scenes were filmed, see the Bodleian Library and the picture-perfect college courtyards for which Oxford is justifiably famous.

Cambridge
Cambridge is a wonderful mixture of the everyday and the extraordinary, a living city that has shaped history and today reflects the best of historic and contemporary life. It was the inspiration for Charles Darwin, Isaac Newton and many of the Monty Python gang. We will have a guided tour of the magnificent chapel of Kings College, founded in 1441, and a fascinating walking tour of a city filled with beautiful buildings and historical quirks, including the famous 'Bridge of Sighs'.

Westminster Abbey and Parliament Square.
The tour begins with a panoramic drive around Parliament Square to see Westminster Abbey, where many of our Kings, Queens, Statesmen, poets and writers are buried. See Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament.

London's West End, Buckingham Palace and the Changing of the Guard
Enjoy a fascinating panoramic tour, seeing Trafalgar Square, Downing Street, London's Theatre District and Piccadilly Circus.
Then to Buckingham Palace to see the colourful ceremony of the Changing of the Guard. We will then have a chance to enjoy lunch at a traditional London Pub.

Windsor Castle
This afternoon we visit Windsor Castle, the largest and oldest occupied Castle in the world. Its proud, strong walls dominate the delightful town that has grown around the castle over the years. Generations of Kings and Queens have conducted their business here and enjoyed its grounds, and you get a real sense of British history breathing through the walls of Windsor Castle, first founded by William the Conqueror a day’s march from London. You’ll see the lavishly decorated State Apartments containing priceless furniture in glorious colours and St George’s Chapel, home to the 14th Century Order of the Royal Garter, our senior chivalric order.

Runnymede
Departing Windsor we make our way to the magnificent Runnymede, where King John met his barons in 1215 and agreed to seal the Magna Carta that was to have a profound influence on rights and freedoms, not only in England, but across much of the civilised world.

We will also see the memorial to John F Kennedy on an acre of land given to America by the people of Britain.


* Occasionally there may not be a Changing of the Guard, on these occasions we will visit Horseguards Parade.
** Viewing at Windsor Castle is restricted on Sundays. On rare occasions the State Apartments may be closed and we will visit Queen Mary's Dolls House and St Georges Chapel.

We're touring sites that made the 'Sixties' swinging! See the boutiques, pubs and clubs that made a decade and inspired hundreds of well-known lyrics. For Beatle fans, there's Brian Epstein's flat, Ringo's Kings Road apartment, John and Yoko's first home, Paul's current London home, the studio where the St Pepper's cover was shot, Apple Office and boutique, EMI, Mason's Yard, where the 'Mop Tops' the played their last ever live gig and lots more other Beatle and related landmarks. And, YES, you do get to walk across that famed ABBEY ROAD crossing!

The tour also covers where Geldof conceived Band Aid and Live Aid, where and how the Sex Pistols was formed, the Clash's neighbourhood, also home to Bob Marley. There are heaps of sites to please Pink Floyd fans. We pass the homes of Freddie Mercury, Bowie, Bolan, Jimmy Page, Macca, Clapton, Van Morrison, to name a few and see where Jimi Hendix died. You never know who you might see in passing! For Stones fans there's the legendary Edith Grove apartment, various of Jagger's houses, the 'Sticky Fingers' restaurant. All this plus studios, record company offices, gig sites, secluded hotels favoured by the stars, album cover locations and story, after story, after story from your informed rock guide.

The final day in our series of one-day Western Front battlefield visits takes us to the line between Armentieres and Arras, dubbed the nursery trenches. On this day we visit sites connected with the 1915 battles of Aubers Ridge, Festubert, and Neuve Chapelle, where the Indian Army gave a magnificent account of itself, and the 1917 Battle of Arras. We see where Adolf Hitler served and the bunker he is reputed to have used as a billet. Australians will be touched at seeing the 'Cobbers' Memorial in Fromelles. An archaeological investigation during 2009 exhumed many soldiers remains from mass graves, and these bodies will be re-interred during 2010 in the new cemetery that is being constructed opposite the exhumation site by Pheasant Wood . We cross the Loos battlefield, site of the disastrous battle of 1915. For Canadians, Vimy Ridge is undoubtedly the highlight, where we take a trench tour and spend time at the massive and imposing Vimy memorial. We also see sites in and around the pretty city of Arras connected with the huge battle of 1917. If time, we see the French National memorial at Notre Dame de Lorette before returning to our Lille departure point.

Salisbury Cathedral
The beautiful and historic Salisbury Cathedral is an international symbol of Christianity and a world class heritage attraction. The spire is the tallest in England, 123 meters (404 feet). Once inside you'll be impressed by the Cathedral's graceful, elegant proportions. We visit The Chapter House home to one of only 4 surviving copies of The Magna Carta and see the oldest working clock in Europe, dating back to 1386.

Mysterious Stonehenge
5,000 years ago the huge 40 tonne stones were dragged from over 280 miles away in Wales. Who built it and why remains a mystery today. Some say that it was built as a religious temple, or an astronomical clock. Stonehenge continues to enthrall the imagination and captivate the heart of every visitor.

Bath
This beautiful Georgian city justly deserves its status as a World Heritage Site, with its delightful terraces, elegant crescents and stunning architecture, on our panoramic tour of the city we will show you the crescents, Pulteney Bridge modeled on the Ponte Vecchio in Florence and Bath Abbey. Then into the Roman Baths built over 2,000 years and still in perfect working order.

Windsor Castle
For the first of our Royal Residences, we head out to Windsor Castle, home to the Royal Family for 900 years and still an official residence of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Windsor is the oldest inhabited castle in the world - it's proud, strong walls dominate the delightful town that has grown around the castle over the years.

Runnymede

Hampton Court Palace & Gardens
Perhaps the most spectacular Royal Palace in England, Hampton Court was built by Cardinal Wolsey in the early 1500s. It later became King Henry VIII's principal residence and remained the centre of royal and political life. Visitors can see King Henry VIII's Great Hall and the unmissable Tudor Kitchens, which remain largely unchanged since the 16th century and no doubt were used to cater for raucous banquets. Hampton Court is probably most famous for its beautiful gardens and the Hedge Maze maze, which has entertained children for over 300 years.

St Paul's Cathedral
A guided tour of Sir Christopher Wren's masterpiece – St Paul's Cathedral - crowned by the magnificent dome that is so much a part of the London skyline. The Cathedral was rebuilt after the Great Fire of London in 1666. In recent years it has seen the wedding of Charles, Prince of Wales, to Lady Diana Spencer and, most recently, the thanksgiving services for both the Golden Jubilee and 80th Birthday of Her Majesty the Queen.

The Tower of London and Crown Jewels
Founded by William the Conqueror in 1066-7 and enlarged by successive sovereigns, the Tower of London is one of the is one of the world's most famous and spectacular fortresses. Over the past 1000 years it has been a Royal Palace, an armoury and a place of imprisonment and execution. The Beefeaters who guard the Tower will regale you with stories of its past. We will visit the Crown Jewels, including the magnificent solid-gold crown used at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, the enormous Cullinan diamonds and the extraordinary Koh-i-Noor.

Finally, enjoy a River Thames cruise from the Tower of London.

Sunday in London
Due to church services, St Paul's Cathedral is closed to visitors on Sunday. We will stop for photographs and spend longer in the Tower of London.

We will collect you by private car from your Central London Hotel, for the short journey to St Pancras Station. Here you will meet the Evan Evans representative, who will give you your tickets and information pack. Once you board the train all you need to do is sit back and relax, arriving into Paris in just 2 hours and 15 minutes!

On arrival at Paris Gare du Nord, you will be met by our Paris representative who will take you to the coach to begin a fascinating day in Paris. You will see Notre Dame, the Arc de Triomphe and the famous left bank. Then to the Eiffel Tower for the most spectacular views of this magical city, followed by a cruise on the famous River Seine. The afternoon is free for lunch, or maybe a visit to the Louvre. Your ticket allows you to continue on the hop-on, hop-off bus if you wish to explore more of Paris.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION – During the busy summer months of May, June, July and September the queues for the Eiffel Tower can be up to 3 hours. Unfortunately it is not possible to pre-book tickets. As an alternative, your guide may suggest a visit to the Louvre Museum; you will still see the Eiffel Tower and have time for photographs.
